Show THE NEW r TREATY The now treaty between this country and Great Britain which was signed yesterday appears to be about what was reported ft abrogates the Joint I partnership wo had under the Clayton Bulwor treaty with Great Britain in the bulging and protection of the Isthmian canal It leaves the United States a free hand to do as It likes from start to finish and use This is what the Senate contended for last I winter and properly so This country can now build the canal when and where pleases so far as Great Britain Brit-ain Is concerned and can fortify it If it wants to If there is to be any guarantee neutrality the United States will be the guarantor As this country was to build and operate the canal it Is hard to see why any other power should expect to have anything to do with it and none could have expected ex-pected to had it not been for that ClaytonBulwer blunder of 1830 It Is clear that the British press Is disposed to consider their country well out ofa false position for they comment favorably fa-vorably on the treaty So all Is well on both sides of the ocean both countries coun-tries havo retrieved an error of fifty years > standing |
