Show SOLD OUT BY HIS CAPTAIN SIR THOMAS LIPTON SAYS THIS WAS CAUSE FORMER DEFEAT Two Men Make Statement Tlmfc the Owner of Shamrock So Declared to Them on Voyage Across Atlantic Toledo 0 Sept 23 Sfiveral weeks lIshed to the ago a statement was published effect that Sir Thomas Lipton on his recent trip across the water to this country made the statement that one of his captains sold him out In the last raco for 300 This statement was credited to B P Wade for years one of the foremost business men in this city who said Sir Thomas made that remark to him when they were fellow passengers Sir Thomas promptly denied de-nied it Mr Wade remembered that a prominent promi-nent wholesale merchant oC New York John McCullagh ot the Belfast Linen Handkerchief company had been present pres-ent and overheard the statement He was rather nettled at Sir Thomass curt denial of the assertion and wrote to Mr McCullagh for confirmation of the matter Following is the statement made by Mr Wade and appended thereto Is the letter he received from Mr McCullagh SOn S-On our second morning out from Liverpool Friday August 1C 1901 about 610 n m Sir John McCullagh of New York and the writer were seated seat-ed at tho head of the main stairs onboard on-board the steamer Teutonic bound for New York When Sir Thomas came up the stairs At the landing we arose and extended the morning greeting when lie asked us to bi seated During the conversation we wished he might win the coming race as we believed It would create livelier Interest In yachting yacht-Ing for the future when unsolicited on our part and without any reserve on his part he went on to tell us how his captain had sold him out two years ago for about 200 or 10o1 am not certain whether he said 200 or 300 but that his crew was true as steel We then said to him that when he found his captain was not doing what was right he should have discharged him Mr Lipton replied that he was not a sailor and that he could not sail the boat but this time ho had the designer with him and Capt Sycamore who wore the best and truest sailors In all England In a general conversation he was quite severe se-vere with his former captain B F WADE Here Is the letter he received from Mr AlcCullagh 1 The Belfast Linen Handkerchief Company Limited New York 2729 White Streel New York Sept 3 130L Mn B F Wade Toledo Ohio Dear Sir Yours of August 26th received The conversation we had with Sir Thomas Lipton Is correct I remember it distinctly but there appeared one of our papers the statement credited to Mr B F Wade which credits you with saying that Sir Thomas told you his crew was disloyal He denied ever making ma-king such a statement and from your letter you evidently did not either Some reporter got your statement twisted as regards the crew and It was evidently shown to Sir Thomas as ho came out with a prompt denial You have Cot the correct conversation which was lo the effect that the crew were loyal but that the sailing master and those who were under him were not JOHN MCULLACH |
