Show RACE DETAILED I Fine Stilling Bresze When Ynchts Were Towed Out Now York Sept 2S When the two I yachts were towed out to Sandy Hook lightship there was a fine sailing breeze I blowing nlno knots from a little south of I cast with possible promise of becoming becom-ing more southerly as the day progressed Tho long h grcsy swell always a forerunner of a storm came in with considerable force and tho roll of the sea from southward south-ward caused by tho disturbance clown the coast made It unpleasant for those not accustomed to ocean waves COLUMBIAS SAILS HOISTED Tho Columbia hoisted her white sails and set them till they showed not the slightest wrinkle or soft spot In their whole surface When once nor canvass wan up and sheeted home the Columbia cast ICOBO from her tug and took a spin ficaward steering away to the southwest In order to test tho strength of tho wind and sea SHAMROCKS CANVAS IN TRIM Tho Shamrock when she let go her tow stood to the eastward and In a series or preliminary tacks got her canvas in trim for the serious business of the day Tho wind had freshened a bit when tho tug Navigator with tho regatta committee com-mittee aboard anchored at the southeasterly southeast-erly end of tho line with Sandy Hook lightship forming the outer extremity Soon afterward signals were hoisted on tho committee tug denoting tho courso would bo cant by south fifteen miles to windward and return READY FOR CONTEST Tho preparatory gun was fired at lOMi Tho Columbia had secured meanwhile a berth to windward at a considerable distance to leeward Baby jlbs wcro hoisted In stops on both boats and tho Britisher was first to break out hers to the breeze Capt Sycamoro was at her tiller as usual Th9 Columbias skipper I skip-per Barr was at the wheel The force of tho wind was now fully nine knots an hour It was some times puffy and occasionally occa-sionally reached the dimensions of a scupper breeze when the yachts heeled to Its strength strengthTHEYRE THEYRE OFF The warning gun was 11 red at 1035 and at that Hmo both yachts had worked to windward of the line with tho Shamrock Sham-rock now In tho weather position At the warning signal both yachts bore down and came 10 leeward There the Colum bin luffed sharp on the port tack wtlh Shamrock closo on her heels At 30S the Columbia went on tho starboard tack this maneuver being repeated by her rival The Shamrock huffed up to windward of tho Columbia and when the starting gun camo had a splendid position po-sition and went over tho lino two seconds ahead of her rival and well placed In tho wlnwnrd berth For once the doughty Charles Barr had met his equal In tho starting trick HARD WORK FOR COLUMBIA Columbia tried In vain to work out through the leo of her opponent Severn short lacks were taken but in spite of all efforts sho could not get clear She was Jammed under the leo of the challenger a position not often occupied by tho old offender Tho Columbia on the port tack tried to cross the bows of tho I Shamrock but In vain The challenger having tho right of way forced her about Instead of going under her rivals stern the Columbia preferred the position under lee I bow so long as sho could get tho wind free SHAMROCK IN THE LEAD At 1140 Shamrock had a good lead of nearly 300 yards When tho vessels wero on the port tack then encountered a pretty hard sea While on the starboard tack the sea smote them abeam The Sham lock appeared to splash moro against tho noseendcrs than tho Columbia but the splashing did not retard her speed In tho least Not a tremor could bo detected In tho luffs of tho sails of either racer Both were handled to perfection and wero given a good clean full not the least quiver being be-ing allowed to make itself manifest In a single cloth By several sharp lacks tho Columbia again tried to work herself out of tho leeward position All efforts however wore futile HEADED FOR OUTER MARK At 1215 both boats on the port tack wen heading for tho outer mark which on this occasion Was the tug Edward F Luckenbach tho raft which she carried having failed to right itself when put overboard Tho wind now was hut freshest fresh-est of Iho day The Shamrock hnd a lead of at least 100 yards and as she ap nroachcd tho mark It was seen that she had handily beaten this I old defender in tho windward work She turned In excellent style and with tho malnbooms square off to port the spinnakerboom was lowered to starboard Columbia made an equally good turn The official time at tho mark was Shamrock I 12512 Columbia 12353 OUTSAILED THE COLUMBIA Tho Shamrock in the beat to windward wind-ward had thUH gained thirtynine seconds She had beaten the Columbia boat for boaX hut had not overcome the handicap of fortythree seconds hue allowance which under the rules of the New York Yacht club she wan compelled to concede Thcro was considerable delay in setting tho spinnakers the Shamrock waiting apparently for tho Columbia and lure lag out In order to prevent a blanket Finally at 1 37 the Columbia broke out hor spinnaker and at tho same time a tremendous balloon Jib Shamrock smartly followed suit In Ito heavy roll of tho sea which was now on the port quarter of tho two boats tho main booms ailed In the water as they lurched to leeward These were tauled up clear of the sea thereby spoiling somewhat the set of the malnyalla COLUMBIA FORGES AHEAD The stern chase la a long chase but slowly tho old Columbia crawled up on the new Shamrock At 2 10 she was I abeam nnd half a minute later was tho leading boat Slowly she still crept and I nt 211 was all of half a length ahead From that time on to tho finish line she kept in tho lead The wind was now I dropping but In spite of her much larger sail pliui tho Shamrock could not prevent pre-vent tho steady though slow gain of lie Columbia For nearly an hour the raco I continued without further event SHAMROCK CRAWLS UP Then at 215 tho wind freshened slight ly I filling out the Immonse sails of the Shamrock Slowly she crept up and lessened I les-sened lie gap between her and tho do fender Now sho was only a half length I behind Now sho was on nearlv even terms and It becamo a matter ot doubt I Its to which boat would first cross tho finish line legs than a mllo away I COLUMBIA IS WINNER It was the last of the many cvcltlnc moments In tho contest for very soon I the Columbia getting her wind froo again pulled out and with surprising I rapidity opened up on tho challenger and nulled autu load that left tho roeult no longer In doubt Sho crossed the line n I winner not only on time allowance but boat forbool HI5RU ARE OFFICIAL FIGURES I 1 Yacht Start Outer murk Shamrock ll00lt 12oJ2 I Columbia MliWJC 125W Finish Elapsed Corrected Shamrock J31S lw44 t sji 44 Columbia 3312 43107 J30S i Tho
