Show UTAH COLONY IN OREGON I I Messrs Nibley Eccles Stoddard and Deo Back the Enterprise The sale of the Conley tract of land near La Grande consisting of about 7500 acres is Important to the Grande Rondo valley especially to La Grande I Farming on the wholesale plan has long proved profitable to a few Individuals I but it develops the resources of the country only to a limited extent This i large l tract which has been sowed to wheat for twenty years Is capable of I a high degree of cultivation It extends along the river bottom and what is I known as the sand ridge Four thousand thou-sand acres or more than half can be placed under Irrigation if irrigation which has not been necdcd for wheat Is i found necessary for small crops The land was sold by A B Conley the Grande Rondo wheat Icing who has h owned most of it for twenty years to tho Oregon Land company the company formed for the purpose of I making the purchase Its lilcorporators are C W Nlbley George Stoddard and I M L Cansey The stockholders David Eccles C W Nlbley Judge D Dee George Stoddard and M LCIlli sey The officers are C W Nlbley sp president David Eccles vicepresident and M L Cansey secretary These men are all Interested in the La Grande sugar factory and they have i purchased the land In order to Increase J j the supply of boots for the factory i Their plan Is not to retain the management manage-ment of tho land perhaps not even the ownership of It but to divide It up Into small tracts and to have a colony of families from Utah occupy it Here Is where the benefit to the valley arises These families will engage in diversified farming on a close and careful plan for not more than 20 per cent of the land l will be sown to beets They will build not less than twenty homes as ella schoolhouses churches etc They will also plant orchards and beautify tho country In many ways The amount of produce and the volume of trade will thus be Increased very materially The sale also Indirectly Increases the facilities for mark ting the produce of a large section In and around Cove and enhances the importance of La Grande as the commercial center of the county For having made the purchase i pur-chase the sugar company will now build a railroad from a point on the Elgin branch near tho Conley ware house to Cove The survey has been made and the right of way practically Secured It Is understood that the actual work of grading may soon be gin Baker City Democrat |
