Show TALE OF A POCKETBOOK How Rev Mr Smith Passed Through Sorrow to Joy I I LOST HIS CASH AND FOUND IT J Pastor of till Church Had an Experience 1 J Ex-perience Yesterday Resulting from His Having More Money Than Ministers are Usually Supposed to I I Carry His Adventure Made Him Lose His Faith in Human Nature but Later it was Restored and1 I Mode Firmer Than Ever j Rev Mr Joel A Smith of the Illff Methodist church was the victim of circumstances yesterday to the extent of a wellfilled pocketbook A streetcar street-car conductor and a kind motherly looking old lady were two of the circumstances cir-cumstances Mr Smith got on a streetcar street-car and started lo the depot He had his pocketbook In the pocket of his trousers The pocketbook wag a hefty one The day being very warm and ono peculiarly adapted to comfortable attitudes Mr Smith placed his feet on the scat ahead of the one ho was sitting sit-ting upon and engaged in thought While thus employed tho pocketbook fell out on the scat Mr Smith did not know of this occurrence at the time but ho had observed the old lady Ordinarily Or-dinarily Mr Smith does not look much nt old ladles but the honest expression on the face of this particular old lady Impressed Mr Smith The old lady left the car before Mr Smith got off When she dismounted the conductor observed the pocketbook lying on the seat and asked the lady If it belonged to her Oh yes she promptly replied It Just dropped out of my sleeve Mr Smith did not hear this conversation conver-sation or ho might have taken a hand Arriving at the station Mr Smith had occasion toted for his pocketbook Ho felt very extensively but failed to find it Inquiry to the conductor revealed re-vealed the whole sad story but as neither the conductor nor Mr Smith had the pleasure of the ladys acquaintance ac-quaintance they were not able to locate lo-cate the pocketbook which contained a goodly wad Mr Smith found himself him-self without carfare but he managed to stand oft the heartless corporation until his home was reached and he could make another raise Up to that time Mr Smith thought I I he was a reader of faces but changed his mind CHAPTER II Much to the surprise of our hero there came a knock on his study door last night and on opening the door he found himself face to face with the old lady who had got the pocketbook She had called to return the purse There Is a coincidence In this tale like In so many olhcrs It happened that the lady owned a purse almost like the one Mr Smith lost When the conductor con-ductor extended Mr Smiths purse to her she thought It was her own and dropped It Into her handbag Arriving Arriv-ing at her home she discovered that she had two pocketbooks in her bag Opening Open-ing the stranger she found within a re coiplcd bill which Mr Smith had thoughtfully paid Time lady at once repaired to the store where the purchases pur-chases had been made learned Mr Smiths address and hastened to return the lost pocketbook Mr Smith was gratified thanked the lady and again believed that he could read faces |
