Show r WILL SAVE WAtT ERS ED I Two Hundred Thousand Acres Along City Parleys Big rand Little Cottonwood < Creeks to be Made Forest Reserve I TRIBUNE BUREAU Fourteenth Street v Washington D C Nov 271000 J iVt the request of John E Dooly on behalf of Salt Lake City Commissioner Hermann has withdrawn from public entry about 200000 acres of land comprising com-prising the watersheds of City creek i Parleys canyon BIg and Little Cottonwoods Cot-tonwoods creeks and also all that portion I por-tion of the Wasatch range which comprises com-prises the principal watershed oC Utah lake Lands withdrawn will be made a forest for-est reservation by the United States Government and thereafter will bo patrolled pa-trolled and supervised by one or more Unilpd Stales forest rangers who will protect the area from llres and wanton trespass and otherwise assist the State Game Comrnlssloner Owing to Commissioner Com-missioner Hermanns personal knowledge knowl-edge of the matter and Its value to Salt Lake he urgently advocated withdrawal with-drawal Qf the entire watershed from public entry The above Is the result the action started by Mayor Thompson and City Atton1 Stephens a couple of weeks rtgo when the Resistor of the local Land othcc posted notices to the effect that certain townships and fractions of townships 01 vacant Government hinds be thrown open to entry on December 3rd Among these lands were portions of township 1 north range 1 east and township 2 north range 2 east In these were about 3000 acres of land which had been surveyed by the Government Gov-ernment several years ago the papers In which had Just been approved and which formed a portion of the watershed water-shed of City creek When tho attention atten-tion of the city officials was called to I this they wired the Interior department depart-ment at Washington nuking that the lands be not opened until the city could be heard The city had an application pending at Washington asking that lnnds on the watershed of streams near to the city be made forest reserves and the action of the Government in throwing open to entry the City creek lands came In the nature of a surprise So at the solicitation of the Mayor Mr Dooly went to Washington to urge upon the land ofllclals the Importance of these lands to the city That he was successful in his mission the above dispatch shows INSTRUCTIONS TO REGISTER Instructions were received by wire yesterday by Register Hobbs of the local I I Land ofllco as a result of the ne totiatlons at Washington in behalf of the city The dispatch is as follows Washington D C Nov 2C 1900 Register I Regis-ter of Land 1 Of lice Salt Lake City Utah Temporarily withdraw from H2lllcmenl entry or other disposal the vacant public lands township 1 north iango 1 east and township 2 north range 2 east I I3INGER HERMANN Commissioner Approved I E A HITCHCOCK Secretary of tho Interior I The lands referred to form a portion of the watershed of City Creek canyon and contain about 3000 acres One of I the most Important parcels consists of about eighty acres and Is situated I about three miles from the Eagle Gate the other lands affected lie between I that pont and the summit which leads I over into Hardscrabble canyon from which point the water sheds to the cast Although the order is for a temporary tem-porary withdrawal from entry merely there is no doubt but that It will be nude permanent Tho land was to have been thrown open for entry on December Decem-ber 3rd |
