Mr Wildcat went fishing together They f lived near each other and so took only one brisket In which to put the fish after af-ter they were caught When they reached the river they set the basket upon what appeared to bo a large flat stone and picking out good places along the bank baited their hooks and began to fish They had placed their basket on the back of for Turtle I who i had been taking a nap on the riverbank river-bank In the sun They wero deceived by the close resemblance his shell bore to a large brown stone Mr Turtle loved fish above every other eatable he had ever tasted and in fact he had just been disappointed In catching a mess for his Friday dinner I ner so when Mr Wolf Mr Fox and Mr Wildcat who were more fortunate began to pull in nice large sunfish and fat heavy catfish and to drop them into the basket on his back ho lay perfectly quiet and thought his best as to how to get some of them for himself him-self Whenever one of the fishermen would come and diop a fish Into the basket Mr Turtle grinned and chuckled to himself but lay perfectly quiet and did not make a sound His shell was I strong and Instead of minding the weIght of the fish and basket upon his back ho was delighted every time anew 1 a-new fish was added to therest for it made all the move for him If he could only find a way to get away with them After a time the fish stopped biting and Mr Wolf after looking in the basket told Mr Fox and Mr Wildcat that It was almost full and said they might as well go home While they were putting away their fishing tackle Mr Fox said that as the sun was so hot and the water looked so nice trtid cool he thought he Would talce swim I I first Mr Wolf thought he would like a swim too but Mr Wildcat who did I I not like the water said he would sit on I the bank and look on While Mr Fox I and Mr Wolf were swimming about and splashing each other Mr Wildcat I saw a fat squirrel sitting on a stump and crept oft to catch lu Mr Turtle 3iad been watching them all very I anxiously ajid as soon as Mr Wildcat was at a safe distance he crawled away as fast as he could travel with the basket oC flsh on his backjvfor he knew that Mr Wolf and Mr Fox did not I see him as they were below on the I I bank of the river and out of sight I Mr Wildcat could not catch the squirrel and after a while he came back tb the river bank and found Mr Fox and Mr Wolf drying themselves sun11l In the sun I Having finished their bath Then they all went to get the basket of fish and then go home but they were I dumounded to find the fish and basket boHi gone I I The stone we put the basket upon ia gone too said Mr Wildcat But there arc no tracks about said Mr Wolf I dont sec how a thief could have stolen that basket without leaving tracks IIYcS there are said Mr Fox There aie little footprints that must have been made by Mr Turtle They go off toward the bushes but I don t t see any comfng toward the place where the basket was We must have lieti It on his back thinking it was a stone said Mr Wildcat Wild-cat See the stone JH gone tool So they began to track Mr Turtle vowing vow-ing to do terrlblo things to him when they caught him At last they found him In the bushes sitting beside an I empty basket and eating the last mouthful of the last fish Mr Wolf I tried to knock him on the head with I his fishing pole Mr Fox tried l to bile him and Mr Wildcat tried to cjaw him I but Mr Turtle drew his I head arms I legs and tall into his shell so they could not get at him They tried to I break his shell but it was too strong Finally Mr WolL said that so long as it was tool late to catch any more fish and as their bait was all gone he would take Mr Turtle home to his children The will find some way to kill him he said If they have to watch a week for him to stick his head out of his shell So they went home and Mr Wolf carried Mr Turtle along and gave him I to the little Wolves They were very hungry at having to go to bed without with-out any supper and turned Mr Turtle I on his back rend left him lying 1 that way all night for he could not turn over without help In tho morning the little Wolves drew squares on the bottom of Mr Turtles shell and used him for a checkerboard check-erboard which was very unpleasant I for Mr Turtle After a while as they were growing tired of this one of the Wildcats came over to see them and they loaned him Mr Turtle to take home with him which Delighted his little brothers and sisters Immensely They also kept Mr Turtle turned on his back and used him to play packstones on and he didnt lIke It a bit Mr Turtle began to get awful angry and when the little Wildcats used him to play house and ate their lunch off I the bottom qf his shell pretending he was a table he became so angry that he bit little Thomas Wildcat on the big toe and when the children all ran to tell their mother Mr Turtle ate up every piece of lunch which the children I had knocked on the ground In their 1 hurry Then Mrs Wildcat was very angry antI HMO took Mr Turtle over J toMr Foxs house and gave him to tho 1 little Foxes They were delighted with I Mr Turtle and said ho would be Just splendid to play backgammon and Fox and Geese upon Mr Turtle did not I think so but kept getting angrier and angrier The little Foxes were having a fine time when suddenly Mr Fox came flyIng I fly-Ing In the door Run fnJldChe cried Mr Dog Is after me So they all ran S Into the house and Mrs Fox shut the f I door and bolted It on theInsldc Mr Dog came bounding p and rattled rat-tled the door but it was fast and he could not got In He then tried the window but they were fast too Then he wiped his face with his handkerchief handker-chief and sat down to rest for he was very tired as he had chased Mr Fox for a long distance He sat on the first thing handy which happened to be Mr Turtle who was very much Insulted Insult-ed The Idea of a big clumsy dog not knowing any better than to sit on a gentleman like me he thought and ho stretched out lila neck and caught Mr Dogs tail in his strong Jaws Mr I Dog howled with pain and tried to shake Mr Turtle off but he could not zo he started for home running even faster than when he was chasing Mr Fox Mr Turtle held on and at last Mr Dog came to Mr Mans barn where he lived Mr Turtle had been getting angrier and angrier for so long a limo that he was now as angry as he could be and ho bit Mr Dogs tall so hard that Mr Dog howled as if ho was being killed Mr Man came running out of the barn to see what the mattel was and he pried Mr Turtles Jaws open and bade him let go of Mr Dogs tall Then ho took Mr Turtle Into the house and gave him to his little girl Elsie to play with Elsie was a very nice little girl and she fed Mr Turtle with things that he lII < edso that he did not bite her but she was very fond of doing sums in fractions on his stomach This was very uncomfortable for Mr Turtle and besides he had always hated fractions when he was at school Finally Elsie put him down and went Into the house for a minute and when she came out Mr Turtle was gone He had started out for the river as fast as he could go I for he did not dare to go back to the r woods for fear of the little Foxes Wolves and Wildcats and he did not want to stay around houses where little lit-tle girls were liable to do fractions on his stomach lie reached the river and crawled into the mud at the bottom and he has stayed there over since His family lives there to this day and people peo-ple call them Mud Turtles I t7l j I e4tai I tJTh 4 I J LJq1 r 1 Ar b 9 I i 41Y f I S I 2 I Tile
