Show CONCLUDES HIS ARGUMENT I Brigham H Roberts Finishes His Speech to Committee Washington Jan GWhen the Roberts Rob-erts committee resumed its sessions today to-day Mr Roberts went on with his arguments ar-guments begun yesterday Ho reviewed the action of the Constitutional convention con-vention of Utah urging that this carried car-ried out the requirements of the Congress Con-gress for the admission of Utah as a State namely that polygamous marriages mar-riages should no longer be contracted In particular Mr Roberts contended there was no requirement by Congress or in the Constitutional convention that prcvjously contracted matrimonial l associations as-sociations should be Interrupted In the course of his argument Mr Roberta said he had observed that tho ladles involved in this question of plural wives Were quite generally received in the circles 01 Gentile ladles < In Utah Ho vehemently denounced what he characterized as the sensational crusade made against him and also the effort to arouse public feeling by saying The American home was In danger If ncccsjsaiy ho exclaimed I could call attenlon to 10000 evils which threaten the country without going to the State of UtalL In closing Mr Roberu said that patriotism pa-triotism of the Mormon church toward the country could not be questioned When a fund was raised for the sur vlvcrs of the battleship Maine tho Mormon church had contributed one fifth of the entire amount When the countrys authority in the Philippines was questioned Utahs guns handled by Utah men had been in the forefront of the fray Mr Schroeder the Gentile representative represen-tative stated that no further point would be made on Robertss naturalization naturaliza-tion papers aa It was desired to cx elude him from Congress specifically and solely on the ground of his being a polygamist After the arguments closed members of the committee attached some importance im-portance to the question asked by Chairman Tayler of Roberts relative to the latter being amenable while In the District of Columbia to the Edmund Ed-mund act It la understood special attention may be given by the committee com-mittee to this feature At 1230 tho arguments on both sides were closed and the committee went Into executive session At the execu tive session it was decided to close the hearings and the testimony unless cx Secretary Carlisle desired to bo heard further The committee then adjourned until 10 a m next Wednesday There was no vote or other action on the final disposition of the case |
