Show SETS CONVENTION WILD Mention of Bryans Name Causes a I Gxcat Demonstration I The conclusion of Chairman Richard sons speech whIch he had arranged under sixteen separate heads was the signal for lerrlfic applause and cheers His mention or the name of W J Bryan brought the convention to Its feet In a frenzy of excitement Delegates Dele-gates sprang upon their chairs waving hats handkerchiefs and umbrellas in the wildest fashion By a common Impulse I Im-pulse the polls bearings the names of the States were torn up and thrust into I the air Then down the aisles toward the I speakers desk came groups of delegate dele-gate surrounding one man who held the name of the Slate aloft Texas and New York became engaged In a rivalry as to which should hold the name of the State highest in the air TEXAS HAD ADVANTAGE The Lone Star State had the advantage advan-tage at the outset for the New York standard had hen grasped by one of the small men of the delegation This I was quickly remedied when the Tammany Tam-many men saw themselves In second place The pole bearing the name of I the State wan grabbed from the small New Yorker he was bumped down into I his chair and Mr Keller Indorsed by Now York for VicePresident seized it Mr Kellar put Texas in second place in a flash and try as desperately as ho might the Texan could not place the name of his State within ono foot of that of N6w York Wild wIth excitement excite-ment the Texans grasped their man raised him on their shoulders and New York was down again but as before it went down only to rise higher Richard Rich-ard Crolcer Grady Carroll and half ado a-do en others of the New York delegation delega-tion came to Mr Kellars aid and the emblem of the Empire Slate went up again nearer the coiling by a foot than Texas had been able to reach While this strife was going on bet be-t the two States the frenzy had taken hold of the other delegations and rom all parts of the hall men came plunging through the throng carrying their State emblems They became densely packed In front of the clerks desk and yelling and cheering like maniacs they strove to raise the name of their State level with New York luhc effort was useless hoAvover and held firm by the Tammany men New York kept Its place I RUSH FOR SPEAKERS STAND The Georgia men wrought up by their failure to equal New York made a rush for the speakers stand They went through tho crowd with a force that no opposition thc crowd could prevent and pushing shoving1 clawing J and cheering they hoisted their man I upon the platform and lifted him upon I a chair The effort was successful and I New York Ava eclipsed once more j Kellar Is no small man to hold aloft in I a crowd of struggling gushing men j and tho Tammany crowd was nearly j ready to drop with exhaustion but a glance at the Georgia banner brought I new strength Into their Avearled arms and now dctcrmlnulion into their heart und Mr Kellar went up still higher and New York was on top once followed by a shouting mob which bore all before It The band struck up The Stars and Stripes and to these inspIring strains the men commenced to march around tho floor yelling like mud men waving wav-ing everything that could be lifted < < into I the air Hats handkerchiefs umbrel Jas State emblems banners and the national colons were united In a conglomerate con-glomerate wave and beneath It c marched a crod of men fairly beside themselves with excitement With I Hushed faces down which the persplra thou rolled in streams many without coats and vests they went round and round the hall shouting yelling and screaming at the top of their voices JOINED IN SHOUTING Those delegates who did not join in I the march lent most effective aid In Increasing the uproar They could contribute con-tribute nothIng but their voices and their hats and handkerchiefs but they used the first as though they were made of brass and originally designed for one nights wear only and the latter two in a manner fully aa energetic The band did its share and the tooters of horns and the beaters of sheepskins Avorlccd nAvay for dear life Nobody f knew what they playednobodY cared I They were doing their full share and that was all that was necessary EFFORT TO RESTORE ORDER After the excitement had continued fifteen minutes Chairman Richardson attempted to bring order out of tho chaos thai ruled upon the floor Now and then the patter of hla gavel could be heard and every time the sotind reached the ears of a delegate he shrieked the louder Time after time the chairman attempted to restore quiet but he was utterly lost and overwhelmed over-whelmed wIth each fresh effort FINALLY QUIETED j Precisely tAvenly minutes after Chairman Chair-man Richardson had mentioned the name of Bryan which like the waving of a magic wand had conjured up a scene of such wonderful enthusiasm as has seldom been witnessed In a political politi-cal convention he began to rap for order or-der but the delegates Were not yet ready to yield the floor even to the chairman of the convention The band In the gallery started a patriotic air nnd despite the continuous efforts of Chairman Richardson to restore order the demonstration continued for nine and a half minutes longer its total length being twentynine and onehalf minutes ADJOURNMENT TAKEN Order then was sufficiently restored to enable the chairman to recognize I Delegate J G Johnson of Kansas who made a motion that the convention I adjourn until 1030 a tomorrow At 1030 the chairman declared the convention I con-vention adjourned I |
