late hour tonight to-night the expected climax of the day the nomination of William J Bryan as Democratic candidate for President has failed of realization and all of the larger business of the convention awaits the completion of the platform As a spectacular event however the convention has fulfilled the hopes of the most fervid party man for the vast assemblage of delegates and spectators has twice been swept with whirlwind demonstrations first for the lender who Is about to be placed in nomination and then for tjiat other champion of Democracy David Bennett Hill But in actual accomplishment the days work Is confined to organization with the speeches of the temporary chairman Gov Thomas of Colorado and of the permanent chairman lion James D Richardson the appointment of the various committees and the detailed i de-tailed propositions for the more serious work yet in store I INSPIRING SCENE I It was yet an inspiring scene that ClUflifnTSIff Jones looked out upon when 7i tile press from every section of the country Above and on all sides 1 was a gorgeous sunburst of color huge Hugs in rosettes and graceful fan shapes bunting looped and in streamers i ers mottoes and coalsofarms of many SIn tes mingling this overhanging I spread of color with the bright summer i hats and dresses of the many women present NOT WEALTH AND FASHION ALONE But it was clearly not a gathering alone of wealth and fashion The bronzed faces o f many of the men their coarse shirts collars and scarMcss marked them as from the soil With hardly an exception they took off their coats and sat shirtsleeves and democratic demo-cratic Many of the women were in cambrics and ginghams rather than inv in-v come from the Mayor of the city and the other from Gov Thomas of Colorado Colo-rado assuming the duties of temporary chairman WILD SCENE AT NIGHT At the night session the structure was invaded by thousands and the moving picture took on new glories of color and animation under the glare of countless count-less electric lights For the first hour the proceedings were formal and profitless profit-less but when at the clpse of the speech of Permanent Chairman Richardson Rich-ardson he paid a glowing tribute to William J Bryan pandemonium broke loose i nd the historic scene of Bryans nomination at Chicago was repeated even exceeded in a frenzied demonstration demon-stration lasting half an hour The standards were wienched from their sockets and borne aloft a battle of supremacy was waged among the standardbearers urged on by the deafening deaf-ening applause of the entire shouting gesticulating multitude Outside of the formal proceedings of the day interest was centered In the action of the platform committee As the evening advanced it became known that a determined struggle was In progress pro-gress involving not only the question ofincorppratlug a specific 15 to 1 declaration dec-laration in the party declaration but to some extent involving time
