Show A Noonday Rest In several of the largest Eastern cities what Is known as a Noonday Rest has been established for women In business where they may have some of tho comforts of a I clubhouse Chicago Chi-cago has one which has been very successful suc-cessful and the Business Womans club of this city hopes at some time xo be able to establish one here It Is not tho intention of the club of course to carry out Its purpose l in the Immediate future but this is one of the good things It has in mind for the future So an article from the New York Tribune describing the Chicago rest and its advantages will be of interest r to any who are not familiar with Its workings It says The advantages of i the rest arc that there the selfsupport ing woman may get a delicious meal at a small cost and also the daily use during dur-ing the luncheon hour of a library sit tingroom dressingroom and lounging robm for a trilling monthly fee The food served at the Chicago club Is always of good quality and prepared as It would be In a wellconducted home tho woman In charge receiving 1200 a year The system of serving It Is unusual un-usual but effective On entering a nonmember non-member gives 5 cents to the clerk seated at the door then passes Into the serving room where counters on two sides are covered with soups meats vegetables salads and so on Here she takes a plate and helps herself No article ar-ticle costs more than 5 cents butter Is 1 cent bread 1 cent a slice doughnuts dough-nuts 2 cents coffee 3 cents A good hot luncheon or dinner can be obtained for 15 cents When one has filled her plate she passes Into the diningroom and past another clerk who surveys her plate of food and seeing at a glance Its value drops a celluloid check with the proper numbers Into the saucer Tho guest then finds a seat where she pleases deposits de-posits her food and goes tQ the center of the room where the supply of knives forks teaspoons and napkins Is kept and helps herself to sealso to a glass of water If she wishes itan proceeds I pro-ceeds to eat her dinner The method has many advantages There Is no waiting to be served and much expense Is saved In thus being able to dispense with the large retinue of waiters needed to serve from 800 to 1000 people between the hours of 11 and 2 clock If one wants more than shoat I sho-at first selects she returns to the serv ingroom and nets It and her check is changed to suit the added amount When sho has finished eating she gathers gath-ers up her dishes and carries them tea table at one side of the diningroom where two girls are engaged In washing wash-ing the dishes as they accumulate She then passes out at another door pays her bill to still another clerk and Is I free to go on her way |
