Show I VISIT OF DR WM F SLOCUM I Noted President of Congregational College at Colorado Springs Here on Educational Mission r i I I I 4Dc 443 t fqA1 tf f r I I f t r > T it < > 1 I j I Mfl411 j I l ft I 4L President William Slocum of Colorado Colo-rado college arrived ln Salt Lake yesterday yes-terday noon from Colorado Springs anil vas welcomed by Rev Dr Brown of the First Congregational church who took him to the parsonage on East First South street for entertainment while in this city In the afternoon I Dr Brown escorted President Slocum r to Saltalr where he greatly enjoyed Americas Dead GOO and last evening Informally discussed with Dr Broun and trustees of the Gr academy matters pertaining to the academy curriculum cur-riculum This morning the visitor preaches In the First Congregational church addresses the afternoon meeting meet-ing of the Y M C A at 343 and then I goes to Ogden to preach in the Congregational Con-gregational church there returning to this city Monday morning President Slocum has been in Salt Lake before and has many acquaintances acquaint-ances here who will be glad to scp him again He Is a member of the board of trustees of Gordon academy and his visit to this city is to review and rearrange anele arrange the course of study In order to place the academy on a par with other preparatory schools of prominence promi-nence and especially to place It more than ever In sympathy and close touch with Colorado college so that the latter lat-ter Institution will be most favorably considered by the graduating classes of the academy I President Sl cum Is one of the J S distinguished educators In the Weal He has declined no less I than eight invitations in-vitations to become president oC other collegiate Institutions within the last three years and it Is due to his Intelligent In-telligent direction and watchful care that Colorado college has reached the high standing for which It is now distinguished dis-tinguished Dr Slocum graduated from Amherst in 1S74 and after several sev-eral years of travel and study at the more noted European universities and I at Johns Hopkins In Baltimore graduated grad-uated from Andover theological seminary sem-inary In 1SS9 He has since been the executive Colorado college The college has now twelve buildings build-ings with 100000 in hand for n new I scientific building and has 517 students stu-dents with thirtyseven instructors The Congregatlonallst and other atlonalst papers pa-pers have given extended and very complimentary notices of President Slocums work and much opace to reports I re-ports of the colleges quartocenten sin this year Dr Slocum remarked yesterday that he entertained great and growing hopes of the cause oc education educa-tion In the West and said that Eastern Institutions fact wore also recognizing that |
