| Show TAX ON TEA TO REMAIN Republican Members of Ways and Means Committee Consider a Measure to i Reduce War Revenue Taxes Aim of Committee Will be to Abolish the Most Burdensome Taxes and to Grant Relief1 from Stamp Taxes as Much as Possible Secretary Gage and Commissioner Wilson Confer Withthe CommitteeAtey Reduce Revenue 30000000 1 Washington Nov OThe Republican can members of the Ways and Means committee met today to consider a I measure for the reduction of the war revenue tax The most Important action I ac-tion taken was a decision not to remove I f the tax of 10 cents apound on tea TheI committee will not take up or disturb the tariff on Import as tho members I I claim It will open up the whole subject of tariff revision I Tlhe commission will not grant any hearings while framing the bill as full hearings were given during the last session ses-sion of Congress and since then briefs and statements of various interests 1 have been received Parties who are Interested can file briefs or statements with the committee I commit-tee MAY CUT THIRTY MILLIONS j Secretary Gage and Commissioner Wilson of the Internal revenue bureau were before time committee for some time I tme during the afternoon The Secretary told the committee that in his opinion there jnlght be a reduction In revenues of 30000000 The war revenue act now 3000000 raises about 100000000 Commissioner Wilson went over tho schedules with the members of the com imittee and both he and Secretary Gage were questioned as to where reductions could be made to the best advantage from the treasury viewpoint Considerable Consid-erable of the discussion was centered in schedule B which taxes medicinal and proprietary articles and preparations prepara-tions perfumery cosmetics chewing gum wines etc There was also discussion of stamp taxes Tho discussion Indicated that the committee favored quite a change 11 this feature of the law and reductions reduc-tions wherever possible The committee commit-tee also desires to eliminate the taxes ion conveyances of which there has been a great deal of complaint RELIEF FROM STAMP TAXES I can be stated that It will bethe aim of the committee to abolish the most burdensome Tftxcs and to grant relief from stamp taxes as far n possl bte > TlVe committee latp In the day called on the President to obtain his vjcws on the proposed reduction The committee will meet again tomorrow The committees conference with the President lasted less than an hour The committee and the President agreed en the desirability of the reduction or abolition of the war taxes where they have proved annoying and irritating to Interests involved and have not produced pro-duced much revenue The President believes the surplus In the treasury Is accumulating too rapidly and that conservative con-servative may be made safely safe-ly I or the taxes entirely removed in tome instances The Republican members mem-bers believe they will be able to agree Ina few days on the general line of changes to be made After there has been n general inter change of opinion on the proposed reduction re-duction it Is quite likely that a subcommittee sub-committee will be appointed to draft a measure I Is not believed the bill can be prepared and ready for the full I committee until the session begins The measure after it is agreed upon by the Republicans will be submitted to the full committee OLEOMARGARINE BILL Suggestion has been made that the oleomargarine bill now on the House Calendar and made a special order for December 6th might be made a part of the war revenue reduction bill Representative Repre-sentative Tawnoy the father of the oleomargarine bill when asked about this said that the oleomargarine bill would be passed by the House early In the session so that an opportunity will bp given to ascertain if there Is a dls positon to defeat the measure by any unusual delay In such case he hit mated the oleomargarine bill might be made a part of the revenue reduction bill in the Senate |
