Show Rampton Supports ' Administration on Thailand Operation Calvin L. Rampton, candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator, Tuesday Tues-day night praised the Kennedy Administration's action in sending send-ing U. S. Marines to Thailand. Speaking before a meeting of the Tooele County Democratic delegates, Mr. Rampton stated: "The aggression in Laos is the first major attempt of the communist com-munist nations to expand their territory since the Berlin ultimatum ulti-matum last November. The action ac-tion of the 7th Fleet in moving troops ashore from the Gulf of Siam is consistent with the administration ad-ministration policy of using firm military measures to counter the communist aggression." Mr. Rampton asserted that a defense of the Thai-Laotian border bor-der will present greater problems prob-lems from a tactical standpoint than would a defense of Berlin. He also pointed out that any in- ( tervention in Thaland must come at the request of the Thai government as the U.S. has no territorial jurisdiction there. "Our supply lines into Thailand Thai-land will be long and difficult to maintain. However, our capacity capa-city to wage guerrilla warfare has been greatly expanded during dur-ing recent months at the initiative initia-tive of the President. Diplomatic problems have now been erased by invitation of the Thailand government for the U.S. to intervene: inter-vene: The extent of the forces required successfully to cope with an attempt by the communists commu-nists to cross the border cannot be known at this time. However, prompt and aggressive action, such as has been taken by the President, could well achieve a stability in this area such as has been achieved in Berlin. The only alternative would be an abandonment of the entire peninsula pen-insula to Communist control, which this country cannot do in light of the assurances which we have given to countries all over the world which lie on the edge f Communist territory," Mr. Hampton concluded. |
