Two men long associated with plans for the new Salt Lake County Detention Home and Ju-' Ju-' venile Court Building, County Commissioner C. W. (Buck) Brady and former Juvenile Court Judge Rulon W. Clark, Thursday Thurs-day joined to turn the first earth for the facility. The new detention home will be constructed at 3500 So. 600 West. Also on hand for the groundbreaking ground-breaking ceremonies were all elected officials of Salt Lake County, Mayor J. Bracken Lee ' of Salt Lake City and City Com-' Com-' missioner Joe L. Christensen. Speakers at the event praised the "significant step forward." They recognized the years of ef-for ef-for which resulted in the awarding award-ing of a contract for construction of the Detention Home and Sec-, Sec-, ond Juvenile District Court to be built in conjunction with it. John Farr Larson, director of the State Welfare Bureau of Services for Children, said the action represents "a full interaction inter-action of citizens planning services serv-ices for children." Mr. Larson added that the event also marks "the beginning begin-ning as I see it, in fighting the problem of delinquency with a knowledge of behavior." Another speaker was Mrs. Russell Bjorklund, detention home advisory committee member, mem-ber, who represented women of the community. She said that "women had a great deal to do with bringing about construction of this facility." W. Lloyd Bennett, superintendent superin-tendent of the present detention home, noted "it is our goal to match these wonderful facilities with the best program of any detention home in the United States." He thanked all groups that had made the program possible. Committee members include: Elbert R. Curtis, chairman; Rev. Father Steven A. Katsaris, vice chairman; Mrs. Ivan T. Lloyd, Mrs. Stanley Marcus, Miss Elizabeth Eliz-abeth Mitchell, Mrs. Russell Bjorklund, Mrs. P. A. Mallinc-krodt, Mallinc-krodt, Ted Newsom, Mrs. E. W. Steckel, Judge Regnal W. Garff, executive officer; Tim Monroe, Rev. Robert H. Cochrane, Mrs. L. D. Schroder, Kenneth A. Griffiths, Grif-fiths, Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. P. Mor-. ton, Commissioner C. W. (Buck) Brady, ex officio, and Lloyd Bennett, ex officio. At' 84, swimmer Sadie North works to improve her backstroke and her breaststroke. She began to swim at 75 and became very adept. Two broken hips which she says are "held together by railroad spikes." do not prevent her from walking erect and teaching classes in first aid.
