Carlyle Thompson, Thomp-son, M.D., Director of Public Health, Chairman. Each outlined at the meeting the functions of their agencies in the program. Dr. Thompson, State Director of Health and Chairman of the Conference, announced that the training program would be initiated ini-tiated first in the counties of Box Elder, Cache, Carbon, Duchesne, Du-chesne, Salt Lake, Sevier, Utah, Washington and Weber. These counties were chosen because they are the seats of the nine component Societies of the Utah State Medical Association. "It is intended," Dr. Thompson said, "that from the experience gained in selected areas, and as ample training supplies can be obtained an effective medical self-help training program can be offered in every Utah community." Representatives or affiliates of members of the State Medical Self-Help Training Committee in the designated counties are expected ex-pected to assume responsibility for organizing committees to administer ad-minister the program locally. Several county committees are already organized and members of these attended the Governor's Conference. Communications regarding the Utah Medical Self-Help Training Program should be addressed to the State Department of Health 45 Fort Douglas Boulevard, Salt Lake City. Plans to train 300,000 Utahns at least one person in every family in the essentials of medical medi-cal care were announced by Gov-George Gov-George D. Clyde this week. Speaking before a large gathering gather-ing of organization and community com-munity leaders in the Governor's Board Room at the Capitol, Utah's Governor said: "When national disaster strikes, whether it comes from natural or man-made causes, physicinas will be too few or too busy at emergency stations to answer home calls. The family unit must be prepared to attend its own wounds, to ward off disease, dis-ease, without benefit of outside help. "This is a grim outlook," said the Governor, "but not one for despair. By being resolute and prepared, the people of Utah in times past have triumphed over adversity. By learning now a few simple essential medical skills, many thousands otherwise doomed may live." Governor Clyde lauded the medical profession which has taken the initiative in devising the new Medical Self-Help Training Program. The training course, sponsored nationally by the American Medical Association Associ-ation and the United States Public Pub-lic Health Service, is designed for teaching groups of twenty-five twenty-five in sixteen class-hours by means of a special training kit. The meeting at the Capitol Building was attended by leaders lead-ers of representative statewide and Salt Lake organizations including in-cluding churches, civic, and voluntary vol-untary organizations, labor unions un-ions agriculture in fact, all important im-portant segments of community life. In urging all such groups to sponsor training for their own members and help organize local programs aimed at reaching every family in Utah within a reasonable time, Governor Clyde said: "I have considered this program pro-gram to be of such significance and importance that I have called upon the heads of three major State Agencies and the Utah State Medical Association to combine com-bine their resources to insure its success. These agencies are the Civil Defense Corps, the Department De-partment of Public Instruction and the Department of Health, the latter to have the primary administrative and coordinative responsibility. I have also proclaimed pro-claimed February as Medical Self-Help Training Month in Utah; and urge that during February, Feb-ruary, the program be inaugurated inaugu-rated in selected areas with the organization of county committees commit-tees and the stimulation of local interest and participation."
