Show Sugar Company, Growers Okeh Contracts for '62 The Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. and sugar beet growers in the firm's five-state growing district Thursday Thurs-day approved contracts for the 1962 sugar beet crop which will soon be planted in Utah, Wash- ington, Idaho, South Dakota and Nebraska. Announcement of the agreement was made after three days of negotiations in Salt Lake City between the company and representatives of the growers in the five states involved. Making the announcement jointly were S. Albert Johnson, of Pocatello, Idaho, chairman of the growers' negotiations committee, com-mittee, and J. Arthur Wood, president pres-ident of U and I. Terms of the agreement were substantially the same as last year, Mr. Johnson said, and were acceptable to both company man- agement and growers. Growers in U and I's five-state district, numbering about 5,000 farmers, received approximately $28 million mil-lion for the 1961 crop. Mr. Wood said sugar beet plantings this year will probably be about the same as 1961. Both company and growers expect a good sugar beet crop in 1962 because be-cause there are no government restrictions on acreage. The growers also agreed with company management that the National Sugar Act. which expires ex-pires this year, must be extended to give the domestic sugar industry indus-try opportunity to meet the nation's na-tion's need for sugar. Representing the growers in the negotiations were Mr. Johnson; John-son; Virgil H. Peterson, Lehi, Utah; Gordon H. Miller, Grand-view, Grand-view, Washington; Kenneth Anderson, An-derson, Newell, South Dakota, and Howard Rincher, Hay Springs, Nebraska. |
