Show The roll-call of men in the field of ophthalmology, the science sci-ence of vision, is filled with the names of well known historical figures. They include Leonardo Da Vinci, Florentine painter, sculptor, architect and engineer, who, about 1508, recorded a theory the-ory of contact lenses; Roger Bacon, Ba-con, 13th century English statesman, states-man, author and philosopher, who made history's first mention of the employment of lenses as a means of assisting sight; and Ben Franklin, who invented for his own use bifocal lenses about 1760. Perhaps the forerunner of al was Alhazen, an Arabian, who worked out the principles of optics op-tics is the 11th century. |
