Show S. L. County Proposal For Youth Camp To Receive Study A proposal of the Youth Advisory Ad-visory Council of Salt Lake County for Federal funds to assist as-sist in establishment of a youth camp will receive the careful consideration of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Wel-fare, the Secretary, Abraham A. Frank E. Moss (D-Utah). Moss has urged HEW to provide pro-vide assistance under the provisions pro-visions of Public Law 87-274, the Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Offenses Control Act of 1961. Commenting on the Senator's letter and a youth camp prospectus, prospec-tus, Ribicoff wrote: "It is clear that this proposed project deserves, and will receive the most careful consideration of the review panel." The law authorizes grants to support demonstration projects to combat juvenile delinquency, Moss said. Droiects which, if snr- cessful, can be adapted for use throughout the nation. And he explained that current youth council plans call for a project with these features: a location within fifty miles of Salt Lake County. a board of directors, appointed ap-pointed by the governor, representing rep-resenting various Utah groups such as the Utah National Guard, peace officers, welfare officials, educators, church officials, service serv-ice clubs, labor and industry. j an initial group of 50 boys between the ages of 13 and 18 years, who are in good physical condition. j camp organization on the basis of 8-man squads, consisting of 6 boys, a squad leader and an assistant leader. Senator Moss said: "While residing in the camp, the boys would work on outdoor improvement projects under the direction of the Forest Service. County officials in Utah have already had considerable success with youth performing these tasks. "In addition, the boys would be encouraged to hunt and fish, to develop hobbies, to take field trips, and to build themselves mentally and physically. "Such a project will be of 'great value to the youth of our State, and will develop much information in-formation that can be used to combat juvenile delinquency all over the nation." |
