Show Sen. Moss to Ask Congress for Lake Study Funds Senator Frank E.' Moss plans to ask the Congress which met on January, 3 to appropriate the money to make a comprehensive survey of Great Salt Lake. Wednesday the Senator wrote Conrad L. Wirth, Director of National Park Service, asking for an estimate of the amount required for such a study. In his letter to Wirth, Sen. Moss called attention to the recent re-cent public hearings held in Salt Lake City and Ogden on his Great Salt Lake National Park bill and continued: "Althbugh there was some disagreement among those who testified as to how the lake should be preserved, and exactly what parts of it should be included in-cluded in any park which may be established, there was almost uniform agreement that a segment seg-ment of Great Salt Lake and its shore line should be preserved and developed for the recreational recrea-tional use and scientific education educa-tion of the public. "Before any realistic action can , be taken, however, it is obvious that a comprehensive survey must be made hot only of the lake and its shoreline, but of its islands and of the lake bed itself, including water fluctuations. fluctua-tions. The survey should include a comprehensive analysis of both present and future commercial potentialities and maximum public pub-lic benefits. The extent of the pollution problem should be studied, so the people of Utah will know what must be done to control it. "I presume that such a survey would require the efforts of a number of federal agencies as well as the state of Utah. The National Park Service would, I believe, be the proper agency to take the lead to the investigation investiga-tion and to coordinate the activities ac-tivities of the other federal agencies which are involved. "This is to request therefore an estimate of the amount of money which would be required to conduct such a survey. I would like such an estimate as soon as possible, as I plan to ask the Congress to appropriate the funds in the fiscal year 1962 budget." |
