Show AMUSEMENTS- "The Enslg-n. "The Ensign" is to be produced at the Salt Lake theater for three nights, commencing Monday, October 3. This new candidate for popular favor is a five-act nautical drama, founded upon the Mason-Slldeil episode of '61. The action of the piece is mainly on shipboard and Its dramatis person oe are mostly man-o' -wars-men. There is a decided novelty about an American naval drama which will be appreciated appre-ciated all the more generally because of the recent extraordinary interest in our naval affairs. The scenery of "The Ensign" ia necessarily novel, elaborate and expensive. It has been painted by the best scenic artists. ar-tists. One scene, by John H. Young, represents repre-sents a sectional view of tbe man-o' -war San Jacinto, illustrating a double action in the play. Tho main and gun decks of the ship are exposed to the audience jnst as these sections of a battle ship are worked at sea. To secure an accurate representation of the interior of a war vessel it was necessary neces-sary to visit a ship in commission and obtain photographs and studies in color. From these a model was constructed giving the fcene complete In miniature and this was finally . transferred to canvas. The results are etace effects that will thrill sven the man-o' -wars in an with delight. |
