Show A Cripple in Jail. Editor of the Timhs: In the interest of some other unfortunate who may fall into the hands of tho Salt Lake City police, I wish to say a few words in regard to the manner in which some people are treated. I have the misfortune to be a helpless cripple, suffering from rheumatism. I was arrested last Thursday morning while sleeping sleep-ing in a haystack in tbe outskirts of the city and sentenced by Judge Kesler to five days in the city Jail. I have no complaint to make in regard to the sentence, but tbe treatment I reeeived while serving my time was composed of ridicule, abuse and cruelty. My ailment has been aggravated, and I am tenfold less able to care for myself than before be-fore my imprisonment. The system of ridi-cula ridi-cula commenced as soon as I was brought i&to the station. J aller Raleigh ordered me to remove mv shoes, and after examining me stated tbat I had no more rheumatism than he had. Another man, who acts as guard over the chain gang, and who was rummaging rummag-ing over my personal ejects, at this juncture junc-ture remarked that it would do me good to place me on the chain gang and compel me to break rock. This was a signal for a laugh from the others standing about, who considered consid-ered my presence quite a jcke. After my sentence I was placed in the worst part of the Jail, a dark, cold and damp place, where a ray of sunlight never penetrates. pene-trates. Upon remonstrating with Raleigh and telling him ot the probable effect such conQnenacnt would have upon me I was unfeelingly un-feelingly told that be did not have time to teke me to a better place, aud that it did not matter anyway, as 1 was to be placed on the chain gang next morning, nd that I would then have plenty of sunshine and fresh air. During the whole time of my incarceration I was compelled to sleep in this dark and damp place without sufhclent clothing at nigbt for warmth. On Sunday morning last all of the convicted prisoners were taken out of this coid and tires ry place and removed to the light and airy apartments up stairs. Tbcy were allowed to shave and make themselves them-selves presentable, and in the afternoon wero allowed to attend Divine service in the courtroom. I was allowed none of those privileges, but was compelled to pass Sunday, Sun-day, as other dsys, in the same old place i Monday, upon my release, property that was taken front me by Rtleigb. when I- was imprisoned cuuld not be found, and was not returned to me. A question or two at tbis point may be proper. Is it part of Jailer Raleigh's duty, and U he competent to examine and pass upon a roan's physical condition T And what business has a chain-gang guard to bscdle tbe personal effects of a prisoner? And another thing: If one's personal property prop-erty caonot be found and returned to hint npou his release, why cannot other and more valuable property disappear in the came manuerf Hoping you will give tbis space in your column, I remain yours, eto., J. 3.
