The conflict between be-tween the apostles ox the "higher criticism" and the belie vers in the orthodox doctrines of Christianity, has broken out (fresh in the Presbyterian churches of this city. At the annual meeting of the Cleveland presbytery today charges were preferred against the Kev. Burt E. Howard, one at the associate pastors of the First Presbyterian church. Last February he hud an article in the Arena, arguing that the crucilixion of the Saviour was not un atonement for sin in the sensn of being a sacrifice. The charges set forth that the views therein expressed are in conflict with the meaning of the Scriptures held by the Presbyterian church. A committee of three ministers was appointed to wait upou the Kev. Mr. Howard and endeavor to convince con-vince him of tjie error of his views. They will report Inter, At the meeting tomorrow similar action will be taken in the case of the Kev. 8. P. Sprechcr of tne Kuclid Avenue Presbyterian church. Dr. Sprecbcr's case was taken up a year ago by the presbytery and dropped, and since then bis pulpit utterances ut-terances along his line of thought have been more pronounced. |
