Show THE NICARAGUA CANAL. An Address by the Californ:a Committee Calling for a National Convention Conven-tion Next June. an- Francisco, April 20. An address to the American people has been prepared by the committee appointed by the state Nicaragua Nica-ragua canal convention to arrange for a national convention at St. Louis next June. It submits that, in this great commercial activity, the United States must push its trade and commerce or lose foreign markets and suffer financial depression. Statistics are given to show what benefit to the Union the canal will be, saying that it will open the commerce of the Pacific, while Ihe valley of the Mississippi, the Guif states and the far west will feel the vitalizing forces of a new and better market for the products of its soil, while the north and east will grow strong under an increased demand for American Amer-ican shipping. The defense of the Pacific coast states in time of war should also demand de-mand the thoughtful and patriotic consideration consid-eration of the whole country. Let congress aid in this great work, not as a menace to foreign nations, but as a protection to our own country and a blessing to others. When completed it will unite by ties of commercial commer-cial interest all American republics, giving a greater stability to each, inspiring confidence confi-dence and insuring perpetual peace among them all. |
