Tin: Times does not for one moment assume that the gentile ministers hero will ever abate In the least their zeal ami their influence against vice ami erinie, nor refrain in the least from up-holding the dignity of their high Bail-ing, It would not. if it could, hae theui eountenaee or even Wink at any evil under the sun, bat it 'Iocs most re-spectfully suggest that some of them ought to consider the fact that they are dealing with, if not a 'peculiar people," at least a "peculiar" enemy lhat is in the front here always. When American supremacy is assured here, it will be time enough for ministers to create dis-sension in genlile ranks if they want to do so. In the meantime, if they desire to assist the common enemy, a common one to all true Americans, that is their unquestioned privilege. Some people will, however, persist in grasping for substance, oblivious of the fact that there is naught but shadow withih their reach. SUBSTANCE AND SlIAIIUW. it is most appiopriato ami most praiseworthy for ministers of the gos- - i pel to inveigh in the pulpit agains! crimes anil excesses common to human-- ity, more especially when they crop out so prominently, as they always do. in metropolitan centers, and both publicly and privately it is their duty and their especial prerogative to do all in their power to suppress tho same and to mit-igate resultant evils iu a proper and legitimate way. Their calling is a noble one nobody will question it and, properly exercised, it can be made most potential for the welfare of the human family, aud it is so exercised by thousands of them, not only in the j United States but all over, the world, But ministers of the gospel, in ooninu n with all other men, are fallible, lis only here in Utah, among all enlight- - ened localities, that the claim of reve-lation is adhered to the claim that a1 mortal being may communicate at anv time with the Deity and may reveal to his fellow men tho will of tho Infinite One through a revelation any day. Vice and crime, inherent in the hit- - man race, are of course prevalent here, but, however, scarcely as much so as in many other cities of 00,000 people in toe United States. So why should non- - mormon ministers help the common enemy, as many of them do through ignoraneo or iuadvei tenee'; Their in iautions are good enough no ono will question that but what about their discretion or judgment? If they were back in the states, where they would Lot have to contend with a I IBERAL CITY TICKET. For Mayor Robert N. Baskim. For Ifrortltr-CnAK- i.r K. Htantos. For Treasurer Harry T. Di ke. NOT STRICTLV BCVMICIPAL. Thk Times has hitherto commended the action of the liberals in placing e tho people the nominees now in the lield. They are all worthy of the choice by the voters of Salt Lake City, and it goes without saying that they are going to "get there," and hence that the liberals will control the incoming administration of city affairs. Concerning tho liberal nominees now before the people, the voices of a few kickers have been heard; fortunately, however, not sufficient to cut a percep-tible figure in the contest, for the peo-ple are even more earnest than they were in the contest of two years ago in a fight with the same old enemy that confronts the liberal party today. And why should not the liberals now be even more earnest than they were then? At that' time the last trick played by the mormon church for state-hood was nearly three years old: now a new one, under a more specious guise, reaches back but a few weeks, so far as the public has yet been able to ascer-tain. Even if it datedbaek to the time of "division" on national party lines last May, it would scarcely reach into the past to a period so remote that it wouldn't suggest suspicion of bastardy. But there is something mure than the mere consideration of municipal ad-ministration that should be a mailer of vital concern to the people of this metropoliton city of Utah, evou were the liberal candidates, one or all, loss worthy than they are. That is the measures pending before the senate and house of representatives at Wash-ington bearing respectively the desig-nations of Faulkner-Cain- e and Tki.-i.e- Everybody who reads the news-papers knows, or ought to know, that consideration by congress of proposed legislation for Utah ha been postponed until after the election in Salt Lake City next Monday. Aro we ready to say to congress by our votes, "go ahead, we'll take home rule as pro-posed by the Faulkner-Cain- e bill or statehood as proposed by Teller? Of course wo all know that both amount to the same thing; it's only whipping tho devil around the stump to appear to make a contention for either on its merits, for the same interest and the same schemers are behind both. Can-not we comprehend that thore is some-thing more involved in this contest, looking as we should eastward to tho city of Washington, than tho mere matter of men that will control our municipal affairs for two brief years, even if we did not have in the lield, as we have got. a ticket deserving the support of every gentile in Salt Lake City? A WA1I. OF HI sc mi;. Tne esteemed evening contemporary is somewhat aueient. Last evening it wasted several "stick's" full upon the candidacy of Mr. Olsen for alderman from the First ward (municipal, not ecclesiastical) andjl'iiE Times, which, as usual, appeared on the streets first, contained a card from the gentleman announcing his withdrawal from the contest. Feed Leonard also, very naturally came in for mention in the same article which by tho way, is headed "mixed endorsements." Nothing worse is said about Fked, however, than the declar-ation that he never came to Utah until the year of our Lord, 1888. Hut the closing sentence of the article, referr-ing directly to FltKD, is resonant with note of despair. It reads: "The 'lib-eral bosses' are determined, however, to give him plenty uf future opportun-ity." Why, of course, he will have tho opyortunity.Jand he will make a record that nobody can take exception to, But the wail of despair evinced by the esteemed contemporary! Isn't it pitiful? It is almost cruel to quote in this connection tho words: "hark from the tomb a doleful sound," but Tin; Times cannot refrain from doing so at this important period. After tho eighth day of February it will endeavor to con-sole its neighbor to the best of its abil-ity, following, of course, the election of Judge Ua.skin and tho entire liberal ticket. In the meantiino tho neighbor ' is commended by The Times for its at least tacit admission that it is engaged in righting for a lost cause. One Wells by Night.
