The opposing forces in the Mayflower war, in which one of Tark City's vaults of precious metals is the rrtxns belli, are preparing for another stubborn engage-ment which begins in the district court on Tuesday next. The struggle prom, ises to 'cn move spirited than that which drove the first jury to an indis-soluble deadlock. West is the only one of tiio famous constellation that went to Washington demanding home rule who hain't been recalled by pressing ptof s tonal responsibilities at home. Hut than, the governor knows a good thing when he sees it, and proposes to hang on until tba last dog is dead, e'en though his clients sustain the loss of his sparkling genius. The foot of the docket is supporting over '.100 cases, and each day sinks deeper through delays of counsel in the gummy mires of litigatiou. The terri-torial bar should waken to the necessi-ties of the season and see that relief comes short and quick. The litigant has some rights which should be re-spected, while the judges well, con-gress should at least draw the line at cruelty. Judge JtJDD to Chairman WASHING-ton- , as ho stood with his old, travel-worn- , Tenn'see carpet bag in his hand: "Hill, hoi' on to tho tail there's goin' to be some mighty choice pickin' on the oth' side th' Jahdan befo' the next 'possum time rolls 'round. The tail may slip, but th' dooty ou rawsin cuts no ligah in tho case charge 't to us, charge 't to us." All the rooms over at the Keeley are filled, and yet the thoroughfares are still thronged with horrible examples these crisp evenings in March. Assistant District Attorney STEPHENS has a herculean load to carry these days between the dissembling of the malefactor and the line arts of "counsol for (he accused.'' The organization of a liberal repub-lican club simply siguities better disci-pline and more stubborn fealty on the part of the great right wing of the lib-eral party in Utah. When the tocsin sounds and the hour arrives tho two great armies in the one common cause will be in line and one column will march to the national air. Developments on the gas belt con-tinue on an active scale and a halt doen new torches will gush from the bosom of this groat valley before many months. 4 The medicated report of C. C. Km wail iu Washington was an ex-pensive publication for the subsidized mouth piece of the church. But the crop of tithings promises good this year. Judge Zane's lecture on delays yes-terday was eminently appropriate. The welfare of the afternoon press must be Bubserved. Prison labor, which has always been the most expensive iu which any ad-ministration ever dealt, having been tabooed now let the council put an army of wage workers on the streets. The services of ono of the latter repre-sents more than those of a dozeu jail birds. Some of tho statesmen say G04 for a convenient estimate who are looking forward to police stars are bound to be disappointed. A thousand candidates can't each be provided with an when there were but 000 iu stock at the last invoice. a Tho present year promises most grat-ifying conditions for ion's wage work-ers. Improvements, public and private will bo extensive and while there is lit-tle room for the rolling stone there is a firm foundation for that which is al- - ready Ldantltled with the matorial strtic-tur- e of the city. It raqWirad just aigttt minutes, cen-tral time, to empty the old theatrical shell on the ojieninK night of "Wilkin-son's Widows," nor was there a big house either but then tho bald head relincnishes its gaze ou a widow with less readiness than upon any other ob-ject within tho scope of man's worship. For fu!l forty years their eves have been turned toward Washington in the hope either that h'Lr islation in their favor in tho way of statehood would fro through, that hills before congress providing lor tho asser-tion of the nation's sovereignty in I'tah and the suppression of lawless practices here woidd fail to pass, or when passed such enactments woidd be annulled by the courts. Now they are building air castles on the success of their late trick, the home rule scheme, and if, as is likely to hap-pen ere long, tho house eomrnitte on territories shall submit, majority and minority reports on the measure they will he predicting that it will become a law within a week. Tin; Timks congratulates the. breth-ren and sisters of tho opposition upon the development of the bump of hope so largely aiming them, but it apprehends that they are very likely to run upon a shoal of disappointment this year, have done bo often in the years that are gone. Upon the failure of the home rule scheme what will be tho next trick they will try to work? It is safe to say that they will not bo long in hatching another one. Hut brethren and sisters, you should keep up hope; it is a most blessed consolation that we can all retain it oven if wo do die in despair. The revival has been tfoing ou for some time, it seems, and the report states that "The, town is thoroughly ex-cited, and the rougher and elements have opposed the revival, threatening t he leaders with mob vio-lence on account of (he effect they were having on tho people, soino of whom have shown symptoms of religious in-sanity. The revivalists declare, it the work of (ion, and have kept up the meetings. The roughs have surrounded the church and attempted to break up the services. This afternoon, just as the governor was leav-ing Dos Moines he W&i appealed to by a local minister who asked him to order out the militia. Tie governor telegraphed lor further infor-mation, receiving a reply that the local authorities and sheriff did not desire the assistance of the militia. Conse-quently nothing has been done." Of course no good citizen can indorse mob violence iu connection with reli-gions meet ings and iu case of provo-cation sometimes caused by semi-lunac-or total insanity brought on by religious excitement, men should exer-cise even more sell restraint than had indignation been aroused through de-plorable conduct at gatherings of a secular nature. There are, it should be remembered, ills in the body politic which no legal rem-edy can bo framed to meet, but that consideration doesn't justify mob interference. One of the ills re-ferred to is the excesses which crop out in religious excitement that result in consigning some people to insane asy-lums and in making intolerable fanatics of others. That religious revivals are often prolilic of great good no reason-able person will question, but there is reason in all things. Of all species of fanaticism, religious fanaticism is the worst, as all the teach-ings of history have proven aud has been so well demonstrated in this terri-tory for more than forty years. Excess of any kind is deplorable, but it will crop out in church organizations, soci-eties, political parties, and in individ-uals; still it is most sad to note that men will try to correct evils by mob violence, a remedy worse than the dis-ease it seeks to treat. rpHE RATIONAL Bank of the Republic. : , j. Denver Republican Tbc I tali legislature will make a mistake ami commit a wroni; if it repeal the siijritr b.mnty act iu the territory. In the belief that this act would remain in force a beet siiirar factory was erected at I.ehi last year at a cost of, it is said, $500,000. It would Battel the circumstance-!- e um'air for the legislature to cut off the bounty. The men who erected the factory bad a riirht to fount upon the paymcut of the bounty for several years.
