The mayor and council barely escnped ven-gence ven-gence last night at the hands of a crowd of WOO tax-payers. The excitement arose over a proposition of the city council to purchase the plaut of tho Klec-tric Klec-tric Light, and Powder company for $340, 000. There was much public indignation, indigna-tion, it being believed that improper inducements had been offered to the council. At tho mass meeting this evening even-ing presided over by Honorable John B. Scroggs head of the Kansas City, Kan., bar, intemperate speeches were made and a committee appointed to present a protest. Tho crowd joined the committee aud as the march prococded excitement grew until the ui titterings titter-ings of the crowds culminated in shouts of "Lynch them!" and "Hang thoin!" The council hastily adjourned. When the crowd found the chamber empty mass meeting was lield, the mayor and council being denounced as thieves. ' After several such speeches the crowd dispersed. |
