TODAY'S OBJt IlECIPMS. Mhies. Tom. Unmarked 100 Centennial Eureka 4 A. C. S Bullion Beck 217 Caroline SO Ontario 150 Maxtield TO Total 647 Hevine's Opinion of Oeep Creek. John (J. Devine ventured an opinion yes-terday on the milling- resources of the Deep Creek mountains. He said that he consid-ered it the most wonderful mineral region between the liocky mountains and the Pacific coast, and why it had not attracted more attention from mining men was some-thing 'he could not understand. He had lived there for sixteen years and is more or less familiar with all the districts and they are scattered over a stretch of country Ktib miles fu extent from north to south. Mr. Devi uc already has a great deal of mining property in several districts, but he was yes-terday negotiating for more, and in the re-porter's presence instructed his agent to nrcr a certain Iecp Creek pronjx-cto-r a gond round ligure for his claim. Mr. Devine had no hesitancy in saying that with railroad ciimimiiiication, three or four districts could prodii'-- at least 1(XK tons of ore a day. Another La l'luta Discovery. Samples were sent into the city yesterday from a discovery which has been made this week iu a claim called the Last Dollar, in 1 he La Plata district. It is located near the Red Jacket claim, and the character of the ore from the two claims is very much alike, Being a carbonate with some galena. The vein is eighteen inches wide aud the assays t. ike ii from the surface rim 'M per cent lead and to and .vhalf ounces iu silver. La I'Lita ISrevities. The new hoisting works on the La 1'lata mine has been started up and sinking resumed ou the shaft of that property. The roads to Logan and Oirden are in the most excellent condition nnd the shipments of ore next week will be considerable. There is only about two inches of snow on the ground in any part of the district and prospecting cun be carried on now as well as in the summer. While the excitement has abated, there is a great deal of quiet work going on which is showing the very best results. A number of men are on the Red Jacket, and that prop-erty is now recognized as the best iu the dis-trict. When the excitement subsided t wo months ngo, there were only three or four mines that show I'd ore in shipping- quantities, where lis there is now at least a dozen of them which can produce a greater or less amount at a prolit. Some of these will do nothing of any consequence uutil spring, but they promise to tie able by next summer to make a production that will he important. As La l'lata has up to this time hail scarcely any capital iuvested in its mines, the men who are there believe mining the camp has made an unusually good showing. Local and (General. J. A. " Colonel Wall's concentrator at Ophir is to be handling lot) tons of ore a day. A shipment of eleven tons of ore received this week from the Jay Gould, in Wood river, netted $:irU0. In consequence of a demand for more room, an addition has been built to the Bullio-n- Beck ore house. Captain V. II. Smith, superintendent of the Bullion-Hec- k came in from Tiutic last night to remain over Sunday. A Mr. Meat liaiu, who lias lately arrived from Spring Creek district, says the mines of that section are improving- daily. Hon. Allen i. Campbell arrived last night from Milford. His principle milling oper- ations now are being carried on iu Star dis-trict. Lead made an advance again yesterday of f cents on the hundred pounds and the "rise is now believed to be something more than a temporary one. The Tintie .1 nut says: Thirt tons of ore shipped from the North Star last week netted TlMi, or 17.57 a ton. The ore only ran eight ounces in silver, the remainder being gold. "The rich shipments from Silver City within the past two weeks, "says the Tintie JJinn " have increased the interest in prop-erty surrounding the claims from which the ore has been taken. AVeekly Mining; Summary. There has been a slight improvement and better feeiing in mining- - affairs this week over that of last. The rise in the price of lead has been one of the causes which lias given a brighter tone to the industry. As was generally anticipated, with the coming oi colder weather there lias been a revival of interest in the Deep Creek mines, and that h:w been flic only element of excite-ment which nas prevailed. Ore shipments keep up to their normal iigures, and should tbe advance in lead prove a permanent one, there is every reason to suppose that the last month of the year will show almost as great a production as any of the preceding ones. There have been several arrivals from lieep Creek during the week and some of them the most enthusiastic reports concern-ing the recent developments in the mines of that section. These come more cspccially from Spring Creek and Eagle districts. Several rumors of railroads being built w estw ard ha vc In eu prevalent w hich have had the elici t of sending several prospecting par- ties into ihe. mountains of eastern Nevada. Several shipments have been received fiom Fish Springs and the district has al-most become to bo recognized as a regular producer. I Kuormoua Traffic of the Electric Cars of the City. "The American people," remarked Mr. B. F. Cummings, jr., manager of the. Utah Ad-vertising Co., to a reporter, "are the greatest advertisers in the world. They are also the most practical and ingenious in utilizing and devising methods for reaching the public." " How about the business men of this city V "They are liberal advertisers." replied Mr. Cummings "or our town could not support four such dailies as it does, together with all the either publications issued here. Some of our leading retail houses spend as high as $3000 to $4000 per year in advertising. This city," continued Mr. Cummings, "has been a great field for advertising fakes of all sorts. d 'guides,' 'directories,' 'pro-grammes,' etc., worthless, or nearly so, for advertising mediums, are often patronized with astonishing liberality. Our local busi-ness men do not discriminate between good and worthless mediums as they should." "How about street car advertising?" "it is the best and cheapest in the world," replied Mr. Cummings, with emphasis. "It is coming to be regarded as such by adverti-sers in all the leading cities of Amer-ica. Though but a few years old, tliis method of reaching the public has at-tained immense popularity. It has advan-tages over all others. The advertisements are large, conspicuous and striking, aud never look insignificant or obscure. Mechan-ically, they are, or may be made, works of art. They are inevitably seen by vast num-bers of people, as passengers must look at them, or shut their eyes. Workingmen who don't subscribe for newspapers, and ladies who never read them, ride in the cars and can't help but see the large and attractive advertisements. "How does the cost of street car advertis-ing compare with that of other mediums?" "In this city, circulation and display con-sidered, street car advertising costs but a small percentage of newspaper advertising. To illustrate: lwill place a large advertis-ing card, handsomely printed, before from 1.5,000 to '20,000 6treet car passengers, for 50 cents. Ten times the money would not buy such a circulation through the news-papers. "1 did not suppose it possible to give such a circulation to advertisements in the cars," observed the reporter. "The passenger traffic of the electric cars of this city is incredible," said Mr. Cum-mings. "I estimate that they carry a num-ber of passengers equal to the total popula-tion of this city, every forty-eig- hours, counting transfers. Surprising as this state-ment may seem, I am confident that it is a moderate estimate. In this city of magnifi-cent distances, all the people ride in the street cars, as it is economy to do so." "No publisher in Utah can give anything like the circulation to an advertisement that we can in the electric ca-s- ," continued Mr. Cummings.
