So much lias been written of the "Clemen-cca- u Case" that it almost seems useless to say anything more. After sitting through its ttvc acts at the Salt Lake Theater last night, however, but one conclusion can be reached. It is a bad play. Not bad as a work of ait, for it abounds in strong and dramatic situations and w as presented by an excellent company of players, but bad in its tendency; had in Ha influences and hope-lessly bad in the teachings of every line. "Tlie Clemenccau Case" makes attractive and picturesque that which is evil, and al-though evil does not triumph in the end.it Is only overcome by crime which is made to appear as justice. In this it is demoraliz-ing. Tlio piece abounds In epigrams, clever and witty, bad as is the play in its teachings. Here are two samples: "It's dishonor; but it's luxury." ''Woman is capable of any. thing, even of being good." The former, ut-tered with the. airs of a philosopher, the latter a contemptible slur. 'J'hu most pernicious of all, however, is the sentiment: "Kxeeptlonally handsome women are made to shine; they are not made to be good w ives and to be mothers, never." W as ever a more damnable false, hood uttered? Is it only the sickly and un-attractive, the less perfect of women kind who are to perpetuate the race? The incident of the heroine posing as an artist's model, of which so much has been w ritten, is nothing. In it there is nothing either immoral or suggestive of imuiorality and in a play of different tone it would be both pleasing and artistic. The company is a good one. Miss Sibyl .lolinstone is almost a great actress. She is physically almost a perfect woman, graceful and sympathetic. It ia to be regretted that her name is linked wilh u piece such as the "Clemeneeau Case." Mr. Cbas. W. Sutlon as Pierre Clemeneeau does much fine work and exhibits a true ap-preciation of his art. The entire company is above the average. The "Clemeneeau Case" will he repeated tonight. "Little Lord F'auntleroy'' will liil New l ear's Eve at the Theater. Hermann, the greatest of prestidigltateurs, comes to the Theater Friday and Saturday nights. At the meeting of the Choral society last UTAH IX WUEF. The People's Opera House opened to a crowded hoese last night, and not a man went away feeling dissatisfied. It is a clever vaudeville, and omo of its features arc highly creditable. The orchestra is a good one, and renders some excellent selec-tions. Bloomer and Stewart in their original act, "Look at Their Feet." have a much tiairer conception of the real negro charac-ter than will he seen often. The real fea-ture of the performance is the Oatley sis-ters. They are simply Immense, and'their popularity w ill be unlimited. They aro the cleverest little dancers in this part of the country, and are as pretty any '; as their art necessitates their being.
