Show Ootnlping Woman. Exnhangs. Among the ordinances promulgated at St. Helena in ITO'J we find the following: follow-ing: "Whereas, several idle, gossiping women make it thefr business to go from house to houso about the island, inventing and spreading false ami scandalous scan-dalous reports of tho good people thereof, and thereby sow discord and debate among neighbors anil between men and their wives, to the great grief and trouble of all n'od anil quiet people, peo-ple, and to the titter extinguishing of all friendship, amity aud good neighborhood neigh-borhood tor the punishing and suppression sup-pression thereof, to the intent that, ail strife map be ended, charity revived and friendship continued, we do order that it any woman, from hencelort'i, be convicted" of talc telling, mischief making, mak-ing, scoldinir or any other notorious vice, tiiev shall be punished by ducking or whipping, or such other punishment as their crimes or transgressions shall deserve or tho governor and council j shall think it.
