On the first day of next month tho weather bureau will ceaso to bo au attachment of the civil service of the army and will be transferred almost in its eutirety to the fostering care of the department of agrieulture. This transfer is iu accordance accord-ance with tbe act of congress approved I October 1, 100, entitled, "An act to increase in-crease tbe efficiency and reduce the expel. ex-pel. ses of the signal orpa of tha 'army and to transfer ibo weather service to , the department of agriculture." This act provides that tho civi'ian duties now performed by the sigual corps of the army shall hereafter devolve opon a bureau to be known as the weather bureau, wh'ch, on and after July 1, ; 101. sha'l be established in and attached : lo the department of agriculture, audi the: signal corps of the army shall re- i:iin apart from military establishment under the direction of the secretary of war, and all estimates for its support slnll bo iucludcd with other estimates for i ho support of the military establishment. |
