France, and was for many y"rs a great study for the critic at the Saion in Paris. Of nil tho painting by Clement, this of the favorite of the harcii! i the tinest, ai,il has iu all ex-hibitions t;il. en the Iirst rank. The subject is a familiar one to students of eastern life and customs. Beautiful women ha e a! ways been tho passion of the hot blooded lords and rulers of ll.e countries whore tho mm shines for ail times. Theso women are oflon uelected from the natives of the Caueassiau mountains to Asia Minor and also from Hie (ieorgians. WTiilo they are really cap-tives to their lord their lives are not hard ones as to physical comforts. They are surrounded by every luxury that wealth and power can secure, and beyond loving and sleeping Inive very liltle to do. In the painting the beauty is sleeping, having grown tired of stringiui; Mowers. She is watched by her dusky maid anil tho tzrim Mus-tapha- , whose cigarette glows as brightly as his eyes lixed upon the maid To appreciate this great work it must be seen. Latiguno cannot illustrate its beauty. It value is $!5.000, and is on exhibition at the Council saloon, 115 Commercial street, where Mr. Harney Tibbea invites the public to view it. tum'AT THE BAR. Th Clever Manner in Which a Frontier Adventurer Ushered Himself Into a Banker's Ooufidecoi, A HINT TO THE GEEDULOUS. 8hs Preferred the Hckmn to Her Hubby and Duertad The Adultery Case Hangs Tire. The feature of the days olio in the district court was the arraignment of C. L. Placer who pleaded not guilty to an Indictment charging him with hav-ing obtaiuod money under false pre-tenses. There is a complexion of business about the defendant that suits his pur-pose well. He came here in March last with a swath and at once moored himself among tho leading brokers. Ha bore loiters from the Don Carlos lum-ber company of Omaha that seems to hae existed more in the imagination than in the reality, and at once began to negotiate for tlm purchase of the Nichols property on Second South street. His manner was so superbly plans-able- his actions generated such an atmosphere of business that the dealer in dirt grasped his band and treated him like a prince. It suddenly dawned upon Hlaer that his pocket and purse were depleted and be set about to recoup their contents. His eye lauded on Joseph X. Stout, presi-dent of the Utah National bank as his victim and securing audience in the star chamber he at once began to set his trap. He flashed the letters that com-mended him as "general manager" of tho Don Carlo Limber company of Omaha who was authorized to draw on the corporation ad lib. Klaur had dipped his tongue in the lubricant and his story tluwed as rythmicaLy as a summer idyl. He desired to open an account with the Utah National and made a sight draft on the Lumber com-pany for "i00. Pin money would re-lieve bis immediate requirements find ho drew his check for at tho sane tiuio depositing another draft for $1,0(10 payable in live days. ISotli were lircd into Omaha for collection and the fol-lowing Tuesday returned with another romance. Ho had paid $:IKI0 on the Nichols property and needed lor for expenses. His che.'k was ugain honored and he went on his way wliisl-liu- g an anthem to his owu adroitness. A few hours later the tune changed and ho went to jail to the music of a rogue's march. His peculations had beeu ex-posed, he had no money, and was dumped into durance where he has since remained. The prisoner is taking matters very calmly as these facls are brought out, and is represented by Messrs. Hamilton Schroeder, while "Assistant City At-torney 1). C. FTcbnor is conducting the prosecution. Th lIlTorc Hill. Party lines were again drawn in the district court this morn-ing. The principals were Sebas-tian C. Lambert and Minnie A. Lambert, he a hard working and in-dustrious carpenter, she a red headed, hand painted nymph, and an iumate of the "Three 2's" on Franklin avenue. The couple were married at Council PlulTs in W. and came to Zion last No-vember. Minnie didn't fancy cooking throo meals a day for a hard working and idolatrous man. She wanted the thrill of a hack ride, and circled to the left with Lou Smith, a jehu of rather a romantic turn. Lain hurt was abandoned and the faded Minnie, after an ephem-eral reign as mistress of tho packman's home, adopted the life of a courtesau. Shu admitted everything in answer to the complaint, and Lawjer Kiley walked forthwith a decree of separation for bis client in his pocket. Tli Eraratt Scandal. The evidence that was frequently in-terrupted by dramatic situations in the Everett Howard adultery case, linished yesterday afternoon, and, arguments concluded, the fate of the alleged naughty pair went into the hands of the jury at o'clock. All night they struggled for a verdict. A portion of them thought it time to administer a lesson and so voted. They were met by invulnerable opposition and tiling into the court room this morning gave notice of their inability to agree. They were accordingly discharged. MORNING ARRIVALS. Walker A. Ilaus. There is substantial ground for the conviction that the "lYople's party" would commit a grave blunder by put-ting forth a national ticket next year. There would bo no hope whatever of electing its candidate, and it would simpiy fritter away in a fruitless and chimerical undertaking tho strength and Influence which it could bring to bear upon the old established parties.
