Show Six soldiers have been urrested at Walla Walla charged with having been eogagud in the late lynching at that place. Tbe good name of the government govern-ment demands that the guilty men shall be punished. The people would not be patient with anything like a whiluwatli. The soldiers , took pistols from the rack aud shot their victim to death. Those arms were intended inten-ded to uphold the law, not to overthrow it, aud the men who violated their trust should not be permitted to escape from the fullest measure of punishment. From the full reports of the testimony before the military court, publiihed by the Walla Walla Union-Journal, it would appear that Colonel Comitoi was derelict in the mailer. He was repeatedly re-peatedly warned that an outbreak was imminent, but look 110 measures to prevent it. When the lynching was reported re-ported bu made no effort to find which of the soldiers were absent. ''To arms" was sounded, but when the uien full in line, roll call was neglected. The troops were kept standing iu line for a loug time, aud stragglers kept falling in, but there was uo attempt to discover who had been away. Tliu colonel's motives may have been all right, but his actions cerlaiuly merit censure. |
