Show The Fatality In a Hymn. Conductor J. W. Stilwell said, while speaking of the Chattsworth disaster in which 300 people were killed or wounded, wound-ed, that his life was saved by the faniil-Hr faniil-Hr hymn, "Nearer, my God, to Thee." As the train approached thb unoi mu-road mu-road culvert Mr. Stilwell was taking up tickets in a car in which there were sixty-two passengers of both sexes and all ages. In the car were five young ladies seated in close proximity to one another, and as the train swept forward in the darkness they sang tho old hymn, which is one of the most plaintive and touching touch-ing of Charles Wesley's productions. One beautiful young girl in tho first blush of ..womanhood sang the verse of the hymn alone and her companions joined in the chorus. The honr was so appropriate for such music that every ear in the car was turned to catch the refrain, and the conductor stopped with his hand on the knob of the rear door of the car until the clear voices of the singers sing-ers had completed the chorus. As the last words died away the crash came, and fifty-eight living beings in that car were hurled to eternity. Had he gone out he would have been crushed between be-tween the cars. Denver News. |
