Ileywood. editor of the World and apostle of free love, was yesterday sentenced to two years of hard labor in state prison for sending obscene literature through the mails. Mr, Hey wood was asked if ho had anythitig to say regarding his punishment, pun-ishment, but liefore he could speak his w ife's sitcr, Miss Josephine S. 'J ilton, a small woman, attired in a red dross, arose in an excited manner and addressed ad-dressed the spectators: "Men of Massachusetts, are you going t) permit and countenance a court that does not loe justice, and that docs not countenance liberty!" she said in a hysterical voice, and with a- seep of her hand, when she was silenced by the court officers ami forced into her chair. Then Hovwood began to abuse the court, and lie, too, was silenced. "Please mnv I say a few words" asked Mrs. Ileywood. softly, rising from her chair. "No: you've said enough," said Judge Carpenter. Tho clerk then informed Mr. Ileywood Iley-wood that ho was sentenced to two years in the state orison at Charleston it. The prisoner took the sentence very coolly, although bis w ife and sister-in-law seemed much excited. Ileywood was sentenced for a term of years mi Jan. 23. 17. for similar offense, nnd served until Deo, It', P7U. when be was unconditionally released liv Mr. Hayes, who was penlinned by I ley wood's friends. In April, ls:t. ho was again tried, but was acquitted. |
