Show w A tuf rita POWER AND LOGAN CITY LI II 11 LIGHT PLANT A about two years ago the citizens of logan began to agitate the question of building for themselves a power and lighting t plant to furnish electrical energy for the inhabitants of logan for a while this seemed to he be but talk until last summer when the council then in off office ice took up the matter quite determinedly and atter after the bonds were voted and engineers consulted they got down to business the power site was considered and the water rights cf an old mill were purchased about seven miles up the canyon at which point the dam was located from the dam down the canyon there was built a flume ten feet wide ten feet deep and about six hundred feet long to the penstock which has a depth of twenty feet midway in the flume is a gravel box and overflow to take care of the surplus water during high water season or at times when it becomes necessary to drain the pipe line the pipe line starts at the penstock and is built of wood staves with an inside dia ninety six feet head in the last one thousand feet of pipe through the upper side wall of the powder house extends the steel riveted pipe joining the wood pipe at a distance of thirty feet from the building to the tee or header crossing the building with a threefoot gate at either end to make connection with the water wheel thus allowing the installation stal lation of a wheel at each end of this tee the tha foundations for both wheels have been laid and one five hundred horse power victor turbine has been installed with a lombard governor one K W rotary field A C volt generator being direct connected to water wheel the conductors are laid in a channel in the cement floor to 1 1 10 the switch board and exciter which is belted from the generator shaft the 40 bala 7 vs A benstock rEN STOCK AND UPPER END OF PIPE LINE CITY braff CROSSING LOGAN RIVER meter at the penstock of sixty inches there are three tapers in the entire length of sixty six hundred feet of pipe the final reduction bringing the diameter down to fifty two inches the average head from the water level at the wheels is ninety six feet thus allowing the delivery cf about second feet with very small friction head As second feet is slight y more than the minimum flow of the river there is ample allowance of pipe way for the maximum amount nt power that can be developed deve lopea the pipe line is equipped with brooks air relief valves in all places where air could trap it is built on a grade cut out of the hillside without much increase of head till within about a thousand feet of the generating station at which point it drops at a good angle derly deriving darlyln ln sixty five feet of the switchboard stands in the center of the room and is a combination generator and exciter panel containing three long scale A C ammeters one D C ammeter and one wattmeter mounted at the top of the marble and one D C voltmeter and one A C long scale high reading volt meter both mounted on a swinging arm at one side and hinged to the angle iron frame the exciter field rheostat and the step switch for the generator fled field rheostat are mounted one behind the other on the back of the board one having a hollow shaft and the other being solid passes through the first both protruding through the front of the panel where their hand wheels for operating are affixed the generator rheostat being too cumbersome to hang to the switchboard sets behind it on the floor lead wires being run from it to the step switch in the form of a cable this resistance is made up of flat strips of german silver fitted in and connected to round cup shaped cast iron flanges making a compact form of resistance there is also a field switch with discharge resistance and an automatic oil cir cult breaker on the lower part of the panel the current is generated three phase at volts and leaves the building through three reactance or choke coils at which point are connected three low equivalent lightning arresters and passes over a transmission line six miles to the sub sta tion in logan city where it is transformed down through three K W westinghouse type 0 D oil cooled transformers to 2100 volts for the city distribution circuits and finally delivered at the lamps at volts the daniels switch is ia used for dividing the city circuits into sections so that in case of fire or any breakdown break down of line occurs that it need not discommode all the consumers when a fire occurs or it becomes necessary to disconnect a certain section of line the street or municipal lighting is performed with 20 candle power incandescent lamps in clusters of three producing good illumination the city plant is starting out under rather adverse conditions having a fight on its hands with one of the branches of the te telluride power co which has been heretofore lighting logan city this however need not discourage the city council as a community as large as logan can not afford to patronize one concern and with their taxes support another it is generally supposed that the fight will not be very bitter as the telluride company can dispose of its power to better advantage than doing a retail lighting business at logan |
