Show the atah copper co of Bing bingham harn the accompanying halftone half tone from a photograph by harry gives a splendid view of the concentrator of the utah copper company of bingham utah this mill constructed for a ton daily capacity is treating tons and is doing some of the nicest wo work k it is ones pleasure to see though much larger than many of the big reduction plants this mill was built only as an expert minetah mill as it wag the company companas comp anys s intention to erect a plant limited only to the capacity of water available and as it now has acquired the ownership of the water from the mound springs near the point of the mountains at garfield beach it will pipe it twelve miles to the mill site where a mill of gigantic proportions will be erected ca the two gates crushers and conveying belt feet long and one horsepower horse power twin city engine for the operation of the whole mill the three engines are fed by eight 60 horsepower horse power boilers all being fed by american stokers smokers sto kers the ore is treated first by two gates K A wa 0 Z M M 7 Z 0 34 pable of treating six thousand tons of the ore daily and which will be by far the largest mill in the world the present plant consists of three corliss engines one of horsepower horse power for operating the cornish pump which has a capacity of 1800 gallons per minute but which is raising now only about gallons one of horsepower horse power for running UTAH COPPER concentrator crushers of 1200 tons capacity four sets of 30 and 36 inch gates rolls six chillian mills 6 hydraulic classifiers several pairs of revolving screens and sixty concentrating tables as follows thirty six Wilf leys two Over stroms two card eighteen six foot banners and two wilfley sl imers I 1 in stating the gigantic proportions of the 13 mill to be erected this year and to give the reader a clearer understanding of the needs for such a gigantic reduction plant we copy from the mountain empire utah edited by blair biair and sloan the following article written by a gentleman who has been intimately acquainted with the property for many years and qualified to describe the monstrous proportions of this min eral bearing belt and the stupendous riches therein contained with the exception of the commercial and in less degree the highland boy and yampa mines all of the pres present ent gr great eat producers of iron copper sulphides sulp hides were in their superficial stages of development producers of silver si iver lead ores the former the dominant oni tina superseded superceded super ceded in the photo by veins by iron pyrites accompanied by the more valuable metal copper in addition to the str straight abight g sulphide producing mines the wall group of mines consisting of some two hundred acres and located upon the mineralized portion of 0 f a great porphyry dyke presents features of great geological interest as well as assur ances of economic results exceeding anything heretofore attained in the history ol of the worlds greatest copper mines the property spans the narrow gorge cut in the mountains by main bingham canyon and reaches to the summit of the mountain ridges on either side it has been ex plotted by numerous tunnels driven into the mountains on either side of the gulch distances ranging from four hundred to seven hundred feet and by a main working tunnel running obliquely across the others also by six inch holes drilled at various points to a depth of five hundred feet below the floors of the tunnels these works extend over an area of 2500 by feet and disclose most uniform I 1 the average copper contents being two and two tenths per cent or forty four pounds of copper per ton ten of rock and in addition thereto values of 60 cents in gold and small values of silver are equally persistent the copper occurs as glance and co in very small hard bard grains replacing the original of the porphyry occupying small cells in the rock rack and not combined or frozen to it the porphyry being exceedingly light soft and friable renders reduction of the ore by ordinary methods of crushing and concentration extremely simple workings thus show a recovery of about 80 per cent of the contents including gold and silver the prope property arty is 0 owned w ned by colonel wall with the exception of a one fourth interest which he sold to captain J R R delamar some years ago and which ca captain p tain de lamar t later sold to C M macneill the penrose brot brothers 11 ers and others COM composing P osing the united states reduction company of colorado and with whom coonel wall several months ago entered into a contract of sale lor a controlling cont roling portion of his remaining interest retaining one fifth of the entire property pending their option to purchase the panties pai ties as part consideration have constructed ted a modern concentrating plant designed for the present to have capacity to treat tens of ore per day the mill is ioia i ow complete and in operation and indicates a capacity of 1000 to 1200 tons per day instead of tons as contemplated the increased capacity being due to the facility with which the ores yield to the process of treatment the percentage of recovery is fully up to and will soon exceed expectations the resulting concentrates show average copper contents to exceed 35 per cent copper the mill will at once be increased to a capacity of tons per day the mining will be done by methods known to miners as the mill hole process and it is expected that the cost when properly equipped will not exceed 15 cents per ton to which will be added milling costs not exceeding ce 20 cents per ton the railroad freight now costs 20 cents per ton but the owners will later provide their own bacill ties when this cost will probably be reduced to 5 cents per ton if any one should doubt the capacity c of the mine to furnish that quantity of ore per day let them estimate the number of tons that would woud be contained in a solid block 2500 feet by feet by feet deep or even that contained above the present tunnels which would be about equal to the same surface dimensions by feet deep or can such low grade material be profitably worked at all let us assume 44 lbs ibs copper per ton at ac per lb ib equals add gold and silver equals at 80 per cent equals less mine mill and transportation costs equal balance profit will it pay the answer is found in the present operation of the mill constructed under the direction of mr D C jackling general manager of the united states refining company of colorado and f the utah copper company assisted by mr frank janney superintendent of the utah copper company compare those figures with the official reports of four of the leading mines of the lake superior
