Show WELL KNOWN MINING MEN FADE OUT OF LIFES PICTURE ENRY NEWELL one of the early day business men H HENRY and builders of the metal mining industry who put park city on the map to stay died in this city on may at the age of 84 years following a brief illness which terminated several years of gradual decline previous to 1880 mr newell came west from new york and established a thriving butcher business in park city he was quick to realize that the district was destined to produce many other mines than the ontario which then was the outstanding enterprise of the camp the old time prospectors and early day mine developers will never forget him they could always depend on him to help them out when broke he would furnish a grub stake to any deserving man at any time and grub stake be it understood has always meant to the prospector for mineral and the early day developer of mines anything from flour meat and potatoes to fuse picks shovels wheelbarrows and candles originally through these connections henry newell learned the mining business he made partners of many of the boys who would locate him in or deed him an interest in their claims when the days came which called for combination of claims and the organization of large operating concerns henry newell joined in As the camp grew and prospered he became associated with the big operators and played the game with them his name his business his business talents and his energies became synonymous with the activities of the keiths the kearns the thompsons Thomp sons ferrys ferlys chambers and all of the other history makers of the park city camp big and little he made money he invested much of it in salt lake and utah enterprises he was a large real estate owner here and had some property in los angeles at one time he is survived by one grandson harry newell salt lake one nephew samuel W whan philadelphia three nieces mrs rhoda M schafer salt lake mrs R R osborn and mrs W L steward both of eugene oregon mrs newell died in 1918 ILLARD F SNYDER another outstanding character WILLARD in the metal matal mining industry of utah and the west another product of park city growth and environment closed an intensively active career and passed away in salt lake on may in his sixty fourth year his numerous business interests are intact and under control of the W F snyder sons company an organization formed several years ago to permit his sons to relieve him of detailed responsibilities when he should no longer be able to stand the pressure under tinder which he had carried on for many years his two eldest sons graduate engineers of exceptional ability edward H and george W with two younger brothers guy M and neal D are left to guide the ship so things will move along as usual to even glance g lance over the numerous mining business and civic enterprises that made fiade up the activities of willard F snyder during the past thirty five years would fill a large volume these activities beginning and ending at park city covered the western mining states from colorado to the coast from montana to arizona probably the most outstanding event in his career was when he with his brother gideon was successful in bringing peter L kimberly of sharon pennsylvania and frank H buhl into the utah mining field he sold them the annie laurie mining properties in the gold mountain district got ryot them interested in utah iron and finally had them tackle the undertaking that resulted in the building of twin falls buhl and kimberley idaho those were the days of willard snyders first big successes those were the days in which he spent much of the fortune acquired through thern them to inaugurate and consuming con consummate sumina te other extensive deals and undertakings if a loss was suffered if something failed to pan out as expected he never complained he played the game all the time his world of friends and business associates all admired his aggressiveness and determination most of which was natural and inborn but some of which his nearest friends believed he absorbed through his close association with peter L kimberley who always declared with respect to his mining ventures that if one out of ten of them make good I 1 will make money there is still room in the field of mining for more men gifted as was willard F snyder to fill his shoes a successor will have to be an energetic optimist and a go getter |
