Show SERVICE IN MARKETING ORES recently several engineers were discussing the question of active service which can be rendered to the miner and ore shipper who is sending his product to the salt lake market and certain examples of specific help were instanced by henry M adkinson mining engineer of salt lake city who is general manager of the assaying firm of R H officer company which has been established here for twenty eight years the examples cited by mr adkinson are of general interest to surrounding ore producers he said definite help can be given to the miner when he is marketing his ore at salt lake by a firm such as ours which knows the detail of ore sales this help comes both in the price which is paid to the miner and in the selection of the best market for his ore for instance we recently received a sample from a miner who reported that it represented a lot of ore which would soon be ready for the market and he asked for a complete analysis of the ore and our suggestion for its sale we made the analysis and submitted it for bids to the ore buyers of salt lake one buyer reported that they had a large amount of similar ore on hand and were not interested in buying more at that time a second buyer reported that the class of ore in question did not interest them because of certain constituents present and a third buyer was interested and made a bid now it happened that R H officer company knew that the third bidder had a smelter much nearer than salt lake to the shippers mine accordingly we obtained a bid from the nearer plant and found that there was a saving to the miner in freight alone of more than per ton on a carload of fifty tons this saving in freight was more than we reported these facts to the shipper and showed him the greater profit to himself in shipping to the plant nearer his mine than to salt lake naturally we deprived ourselves of the business which would have been ours had the shipment been consigned to salt lake but we believe tant our action was for the gcoy cod of the individual shipper and for the mining r business as a whole and in the long run the success ot 0 every individual depends on the success of 0 the industry again a few days ago a certain shipper came to salt lake from a far distant point in nevada to supervise the sampling and settlement on a carload of ore he was referred f to our house for his assays essays and in a long conversation with him we learned that he had not only come himself on this errand but had also brought with him two of his men to assist in the business of watching the sampling 6 his calculation was that in actual traveling expense and lost time at the mine for all three men it had cost him more than in marketing expense to sell this carload of ore his regret was supreme when he found that R H officer company has representatives at the sampling works of all the ore buyers in salt lake and that for a watching fee of per lot of ore he could have had the sampling supervised even better than he could do it by men who are expert at this service when he learned the details ot of the shippers service offered by us he said that all his future shipments would be consigned to salt lake in care of officer company that this shipper was sincere in this we have learned because several shippers in the same district are sending in ore under our supervision of sampling and assaying that we e and these write us saying are recommended by the gentleman who spent on his bis errand and the instances it is in ways such as these multiplied continued might be greatly in mr adkinson that the assayer salt lake can act as the business representative and in this market for the ore shipper be a distinct factor of help in solving NO and of bo both th seller selie problems of the marketing buyer of ore |
