Show arizona mining on the improve prescott ariz aug 16 according to a midyear report of the U S geological survey received recently by the yavapai county chamber of commerce mining conditions in arizona improved early in 1920 tholo though h the shipments of ore concentrates and precious bullion show no great changle change in production according to V C heikes of the U S geological survey the shipment of copper bullion from the smelting smelling sm elting plants indicate a greater production for 1920 but they include a large quantity of copper that was vas left over from 1919 yavapai county arizona since the bringing in of the little daisy mine has been forging ahead in sound legitimate mining development at present old properties are being reopened opened re and mining investors and engineers are combing the hills for worthy properties and prospects in all districts much activity is being experienced and particularly ticul arly is this true of the old silver districts which in the days gone by formed the backbone of the mining industry of yavapai county another mine in the verde district in the verde district of yavapai county no property has attracted the attention recently as that of the shea according to the verde copper news published at jerome it is almost a practical certainty that the shea tunnel has struck ore that makes the long sought for third mine in the verde district a reality an assay taken across a five foot face shows copper per cent silver 1544 ounces gold ounces with a total valuation of per ton this sample was taken on august ath and to make sure that it would fairly represent the content of the vein two cuts were made across the entire breast of the tunnel one about two feet from the floor and the other the same distance from the roof the entire sample weighed about twenty five pounds and was parted by the assayer with the most scrupulous care the present breast is between ten and fifteen feet further ahead and the ore now showing is of much ch higher grade some of it being practically solid the 11 shot through with which accounts for the high silver content the work at the shea is being performed by superintendent perin oscar engelder who states that no effort ort will be made to crosscut until the tunnel funnel has fias been advanced to a point imme abely below the shaft sha ft new prescott jerome road opened just recently the short line road from prescott Pr ecott the county seat of yavapai county Q jerome the center of the rich verde min ang ng austry du stry has been opened to travel credit for this wonderful piece of highway ork rk is not only due to the state govern anent edt and d federal authorities but to the ya hapai county chamber of commerce which started the ball rolling to obtain this improvement pro and which never stopped plugging n until the road was b built ul it the old route over the cherry creek highway nig hway was sixty two miles while the new read acad is thirty two when the road is capped and graveled the running time will be about one and one half hours the project was financed by the yavapai county portion of the states seventy five per cent road fund together with federal aid which has been applied for to the total amount of the states and countes coun tys share will exceed this amount the excess being due to the fact that the cost of construction st ruction in some cases exceeded the federal maximum of per mile apache indians good workers incidentally the construction of the prescott jerome highway affords an interesting commentary on the advancement of civilization in arizona A half century ago in this same district the apache indians were bent on bloodshed and plunder as a means to stem the advance of every pioneer who remembers the verde valley massacre and other incidents of the and will attest today the apaches descendants of those same bloodthirsty blood thirsty savages are content to aid civilization and progress by assisting in the building el of roads more than fifty per cent of the road forces were composed of apaches and they have proven highly satisfactory chief geronimo was an adept with the bow and poisoned arrows arrow they say but the chief of his descendants is the indian who has mastered the art of handling the air drill and the steam shovel this road aside from its commercial use in connecting the famous verde mining district with prescott will afford one of the most beautiful scenic trips in america |
