Show ELIMINATE FOREIGN CONTROL A washington dispatch says that foreign control of american graphite industry is to be wiped out if a bill by congressman heflin of alabama is made a part of the forthcoming tariff bill millions of american capital were invested in wartime war time graphite enterprises in alabama montana colorado and other states american crucible producers learned the valuable lesson that they need no longer depend upon german and ceylon or madagascar graphite for results under present conditions americans stand to lose vast fortunes unless congress furnishes relief and congressman hefline He flins bill asks that a tariff of 2 cents per pound for low grade or amorphous 3 cents per pound for high grade grad e or ceylon and 6 cents per pound of graphite on crude concentrated cent rated or refined flake be granted on the manufactured product he asks a tariff of 5 cents per pound of graphite content this bill is backed up by the alabama chapter of the american mining congress and by the graphite producers representing tex as colorado montana pennsylvania new york south carolipa carolina and alabama grouped in the natio national Aal organization the requirements of the united states have been tons annually of which tons must be 60 per cent crucible graphite the annual value of the imports are coming from ceylon madagascar and mexico the mexican graphite is the low grade or amorphous type the uses for graphite are for crucibles cruci bles 60 per cent stove polish 16 per cent lubricant 10 per cent facing 5 per cent paints 5 per cent and 5 per cent for all other uses england practically controls the graphite situation through ownership in the ceylon field and control of madagascar alabama alone can furnish 50 per cent of the entire domestic demand while vast deposits have been opened in texas and montana of such richness in graphite content that they bid fair to compete with ceylon in the manufacture of crucibles cruci bles other graphite deposits are found in pennsylvania new york and the carolinas reports have been presented to the U S tariff commission showing that a combination of american clay and american graphite has added 30 per cent to the life of crucibles cruci bles and upon this showing and the necessity for protecting a national defense resource the graphite men will make their fight to save the millions now invested in mines from the inroads of the low cost foreign product |
