Show the coal industry industry y of utah while the coal industry of utah has suffered during the past two or three years because of the aftermath of the panic and semi panic which has held the whole country in a state of suspense since the upheaval of 1907 it is rapidly regaining lost ground although the revival was not materially felt until the fall of 1915 during the past few months of the year however the coal operators tors of the state have been rushed with orders and to such an extent that owing to a car shortage that has recently been more or less overcome many of them are thousands sands s of tons behind in their orders with this pleasing condition facing them coal mining companies begin the year 1916 that is full of promise and with every reason to believe that a season of unwonted I 1 prosperity awaits them utah coal is good the coal produced in utah is a good grade of bituminous coal a typical analysis of which follows percent moisture comba combustible volatile matter 3 fixed carbon of coke ash total sulphur 0 B T TJ value utah coal stands handling and storage exceptionally well and does not we weather athert and for these reasons in addition to its chemical qualities maats a very desirable commercial fuel some of the coal burns with a long hot flame and because of its ey ash and moisture contents makes a ost st desirable fuel for smelting smelling sm schools that will vill favorably with any throughout the ate are maintained the childrens play rounds at the schools are equipped with rings ings horizontal bars traveling rings see ws s for the little ones etc most of the amps have athletic fields and field sports all kinds are encouraged the carbon anty baseball league puts up some classy ambitions of the national pastime amusement halls equipped with motion apparatus stages for theatrical per romances rm ances good dancing floors reading OMs billiard and pool tables bowling alys etc are found in most of the camps S free educational system the utah fuel company has inaugurated free educational system for its foreign lopees which is to be commended it the principals of the various at its camps to hold night sessions ro 0 or three nights a week in which the dimants idi ments of english are taught to all for eners ers who wish to take advantage of such importunity Port unity these instructions are given the lines of the roberts system in aich ach the lessons are illustrated by pantone e As the students become familiar th ith the english language they are given e rudiments of civil government geog iphy hy and advanced english and arith tic an effort is being made to instruct ise se men in the principles upon which this vern ment was founded and to create in sm the american spirit and desire for ie e american citizenship the only s for admission into the night schools are peat eat cleanly appearance and regular at dance much interest is being shown by men it is believed that the more powledge noeda that can be given these men re ai garding our institutions mode of living and the proper means of working in the mines the better citizens they will become and the greater the benefit that will accrue both to the individuals and to the state the state of utah today probably has the most concise and adequate coal mining laws of any state in the union as will be borne out by the accident record when utah was admitted to statehood in 1896 the coal mining laws then drafted were framed on actual experience and knowledge gained in coal mining and other laws for the purpose of giving additional safeguards to the workmen are being added to from time to time as new conditions arise the question of safety the question of safety is being given a great deal of attention at the present time competitive first aid and mine rescue contests are held yearly and appropriate prizes given which naturally has a tendency to increase the interest in this work during 1915 contests were held by teams of the utah fuel company and of the united states fuel company two teams from utah were sent to the panama pacific international ter national exposition to compete in the national events held at san francisco during september these teams successfully competed with teams from all over the united states the utah fuel company team winning the first prize for the highest number of points scored in the mine rescue contest thus it will be seen that the coal operators are doing all in their power to guard against the dangers incident to the coal mining industry report of state mine inspector state coal mine inspector J E petit has completed his report for the year which is summarized as follows coal production for fiscal year december 31 1914 to november 30 1915 is short tons a decrease of tons compared with 1914 coke tons an increase of tons over 1914 hydrocarbons hydro carbons gilsonite tons tong an increase of tons over 1914 an average of men were employed in and around the mines and coke plant a decrease of men for 1915 there were eleven fatal accidents occurred during the fiscal year or pe per t r thousand men employed a decrease of nine over 1914 carbon county contributing nine and emery county two altogether accidents occurred fa atals eleven serious twenty eight non serious making a total of 94 black powder used pounds yer par and giant pounds total powder used pounds no labor troubles occurred during the year wages and selling price of coal remaining approximately the same the average working days for the larger producing mines was the carbon fuel company has been organized gani zed and the ketchum coal company reorganized during the present year which will add two more producing mines in 1916 I 1 I 1 distribution of coal in tons shipped to salt lake city
