Show promontory point pol nt zinc deposits deposits one of the most important and successful mining operations of the year 1915 and in all probability the most sensational in the history of mining industry was the discovery of mammoth deposits of zinc bearing ore of commercial value on oil promontory point in box elder county a few miles west of ogden it is seldom indeed that a prospect found in the beginning of the year makes a record as a handsome dividend payer long before its close such a record however has been made by the lakeview Lake view mining company the first to make discovery and to begin operations on the promontory and if the officers and directors of this company did not begin the new year jiin a feeling of elation filling their hearts they cannot be classed with the ordinary run of mortals the lakeview Lake view company during the year 1915 produced in zinc net f 0 b saline a station on the southern pacific three miles from its mines during the same period it declared in dividends and entered upon the new year with a cash surplus of in its treasury besides sides having paid for all development work and for all mine equipment and it looks as if the company would produce a million or more during 1916 the company makes its headquarters at ogden its official staff being composed of L farr deceased president 1 I 1 I farr secretary and treasurer samuel shaw arentz M E mine manager W A Per perkins kinst vice president and business manager and these with P A mattson comprise the directorate in an exhaustive article on the promontory mines written by A G hillen the district and individual operations are fully described but its length precludes its complete reproduction in these columns on account of lack of space the following items however are abstracted for the benefit of those who are interested in that wonderfully der fully rich section the lakeview Lake view mining company during the year the company shipped pounds dry weight from which the company received in cash the sum of there were disbursed for dividends the sum of A reserve fund has been set aside to the amount of this would indicate that the company has disbursed for labor and supplies the sum of incidental improvement and development expenses included in this amount are side track at saline for loading purposes the sum of there has been purchased and installed 1900 feet in the mine more than feet of trails have been cut four ore bins have been installed company houses built and various other improvements the aggregate capacity of the loading platform at saline is tons while the ore bons at the mine will hold tons the company ha has S fourteen frame buildings and has another under construction it has feet of ore chutes eight or nine mine cars and air compressor and building installed and in operation which cost about 2500 the average of the ore shipped by the lakeview Lake view runs uniformly 32 per cent zinc shipments are sent to the kansas gas belt at a co cost st for freight of from 8 to 10 per ton according to value though through the efforts of the company a minimum rate of per ton on 25 ore and 1245 on 1000 1000 ore has been established the dark clark lease on the lakeview Lake view has shipped eleven carloads of forty tons to the car or tons upon which a rr royalty oo 00 ay aa 11 tt ay amounting to 2200 has been paid to the lakeview Lake view company and included in the sum of total receipts given above above in addition mr dark clark shipped two cars of lows grade lead ore running 15 4 10 per cent lead and 1337 per cent zinc the dark clark lease the clark lease on the lakeview Lake view property in every way shows a favorable min ing condition and is in position to become a steady producer during 1916 the ore is opened in numerous tunnels and shows uniformly both extensive and much high grade ore excellent work has been done don e under the supervision of mr W H dark clark and his associate mr james dick E M of salt lake city in the lower or working tunnel being run on the southwest of the lakeview Lake view workings and along or near the contact some of the best ore of the camp has been opened this ore shows distinct rich sulphide of zinc and galena and important developments may be expected as this tunnel is driven into the mountain the cedar ridge the cedar ridge mining company of ogden has much valuable ground covered by several claims with an area of something like fifty acres on this property there are three distinct lime shale contacts in contact no 1 the shale hanging wall is the heaviest in the district following the formations throughout this contact is heavily mineralized and has been demonstrated in development work to carry commercial ores principally on oil the fraction claim in no 1 contact tunnel the last group of assays essays from this tunnel gave from 20 per cent to 52 per cent zinc work is being pushed ahead in this tunnel no 2 contact tunnel feet above no 1 Is in a series of three separate workings nos 1 2 and 2 in a similar lime shale contact no I 1 and no 2 are in east west cross fissures no 1 showing a strong vein condition with body of low grade zinc ore no 2 has a two foot streak of lead ore and vein matter no 3 is in thirty five feet incline feet south on the contact and shows favorable condition for zinc ores of low grade with samples of shipping value the whole showing is so favorable the company has concentrated work lower down the hill to the north and is driving a working Vor king tunnel to open the ore bodies exposed above a distance of feet which work will give feet vertical depth beneath the ore and larger areas of ground this tunnel is now in ninety feet in overlying or hanging wall of shale the purpose is to follow the contact to points of intersecting fissures and fracturing lying between the main cross fissure ahead of the working tunnel is one of the strongest barium outcrops in tile the district which shows heavy fracturing being the typical condition leading to ores of paying quality this main cross fissure on the cedar ridge is plainly traceable from the upper no 2 contact for 1000 feet through the silver wave claim where at the discovery point a 60 foot tun nel has been run showing a strong vein condition of low grade ore the working tunnel is on no I 1 contact opening up ore body disclosed there and together with the mining going forward in no 2 contact is designed to open up these ore bodies at depth with further development of tile the contact workings it is not unlikely the cedar ridge will become a producer of some magnitude and be the means of adding largely to the production of the district as well as proving up both laterally and at depth the im I 1 p ortance of the cross fissuring and its connection with the mineral deposits the cedar ridge was located june 18 and the option to purchase by the present company was signed july 15 an interest in which was sold july august 3rd ard camp was established and tile the company incorporated august 30 december 30 pay ore was struck the company disbursed about 2900 during this time and has had from three to six men employed constantly the officers and directors are S S smith president james vice president A E shaw vice president paul M lee treasurer C L garr secretary and frank jardine mine superintendent the volunteer leasing the volunteer leasing company is located in farr gulch and its management represented by mr frank jardine E M of salt lake is sinking two to incline shafts following the contact vein exposed across the gulch in the dark clark dick lease on the lakeview Lake view which is in shipping ore tile the volunteer work is in ore of good grade in both inclines and this is being placed on the dump for sorting and shipping the lease is also on the lakeview Lake view and covers approximately feet of the contact little mary lease little mary lease is also on lakeview Lake view ground and has two contacts in which ore is exposed work is being carried forward in a tunnel below ores exposed in surface workings under direction of mr wilson and 0 A kennedy of ogden other directors are A W walker J S gordon and john walker the little mary has feet of the lakeview Lake view contact there are two small buildings for the employed emp loyes and a blacksmith shop the jay hawks the jay hawks mining company holds some of tile the best mineralized portions of the promontory camp in the opinion of many mining men who have made casual examinations with more or less knowledge of the district the jay hawk is situated at the upper end of the gulch between the cedar ridge on the south and the dark clark lease on the lakeview Lake view northwesterly the strength of outcrops on the jay day hawk would indicate the presence of bodies of ore of some magnitude and the development carried forward proves this statement surface assays essays of iron outcrop shows gold values from 4 to 6 while below in the lime shale contact galena carrying several ounces silver and up to 50 per cent lead have been obtained a few feet below the surface A strong outcrop of siliceous ore carrying gray copper galena and bromides of silver lays immediately to the west of the lead with the galena silver content and numerous other outcrops and exposures of surface ores give evidence of extensive min mr hawks was one of the first discoverers of the mineral zone at the promontory camp and his claims practically adjoin and constitute a south extension of the famous lakeview Lake view N 0 ogden prominent merchant of ogden and others are associated in the development of the property of the jay hawks company the mine manager is mr jay hawks of ogden treasurer paul M lee of ogden attorney J G willis director johann van den akker the little valley little valley mining company owns a group of nine claims north of tile the lakeview Lake view mine and adjoining the property and includes feet in length on the various contacts the little valley group is developed by numerous surface workings two 40 foot tunnels and 50 foot tunnel in the lime shale contact ore exposed in place in one of the better showings brought as says in copper and silver to 40 per ton tile the company proposes concentrating development work in the present contact tunnel to tap tile the ore bodies carrying zinc and zinc lead of commercial value showing on the surface above the prospects for the little valley are most promising C J tribe is president R S corlew county surveyor of weber county secretary W H taylor T A devine G G williams S A harrop and chris anderson constitute tile the board of directors promontory zinc company this company has the north extension of ground adjoining the lakeview Lake view and starting july 10 has worked from two to six men continuously on development and prospecting pec ting Ore bodies have now been opened on three claims in four separate tunnels each having penetrated the ore some twenty feet or better the main tunnel now in more than forty feet is within a short dis tane of the ore body in fact it is reported the tunnel has now entered the ore in this work which at thirty feet was suppo supposed sect to be about twenty feet from the ore in the lime shale contact the surface ores on the promontory zinc ran uniformly from 20 per cent to 27 per cent zinc the company which is composed entirely of ogden business men is incorporated tor for in shares of the value of 5 cents each with R R gamble president A B corey vice president and general manager J H knauss secretary F P W easton treasurer J L carlson director who with the others above mentioned comprise the board of directors the promontory bay the promontory day bay or its members also own or control practically the whole area of section 31 lying still further north and between the lease of the company and the toombs property on section 30 both of which are said to show practically the same contacts and formations and similar if not more extensive to the properties above described D J sheehan ground D J sheehan livestock man and a resident of ogden who owns a large acreage north of the gamble corey properties and north of the toombs locations on section 30 has done some prospecting in tile the same contacts represented on section 19 and other ground embraced within his range of several thousand acres under the management of wm mccarthy an experienced miner the work on the sheehan property shows ore close to one of the contacts here standing almost perpendicular but bearing unmistakable identity with the formations surrounding the lakeview Lake view and other sections of the district this section of tho 4 district shows the same extensive as the other portions but has if anything the appearance of stronger fissuring bold intrusive factors and unmistakable evidence of thermal action accompanied by extensive metamorphism of tile the lime and lime here showing conformably and in place red lode mining company while only in operation during the month the red lode has made good progress it is located near the toombs property and north of the little valley on patented ground owned by mr D J sheehan the name red lode is derived fr from nl the fact that on the companas comp anys property there is a big contact filled with a red oxidized and mineralized gan ganab giau heavy with iron and which assays essays well on the surface in zinc carrying silver values late assays essays show 6 per cent zinc and 10 ounces silver work is being concentrated on this lode in the contact and there is every prospect that pay will be encountered with a limited amount of work the company is incorporated corp orated for and E A stratford is president everett vice dent harry hales county clerk of weber county secretary trea treasurer surer who with thos cunningham lorenzo hales azael farr and alfred E stratford jford form the board of directors summary the average business r nan man who hears much talk of the mines at promontory will have little conception of the extent of throughout this district promontory mining district is about twelve miles in length and has a width of at least a mile if this area were to be mined a century and assuming that development in that time should open the four principal contact fissures this would involve with crosscuts cross cuts and drifts more than fifty miles of underground work to a depth of one hundred feet it is by no means assured that the best or even the largest ore bodies have been or will be developed above or down to feet depth splendid ore showing the improvement in character that might be expected is showing in the lowest workings say down to 61 a depth of feet that these ores will be mined at much greater depths is as certain as two and two are four following ordinary methods of inference and deduction in fact the evidence in present development would be equally conclusive that these ores came from great depth and consequently may be mined say to 1500 feet depth without serious inconvenience it is also apparent that the present workings either lateral or vertical have not as yet penetrated to the larger mineralized zones development now going forward on several properties may at any time bring in other rich producers this means that the production at promontory may at an early date be doubled and doubled again with the workings being driven at this writing no considerable sid erable sums of cash will be expended for such work without result and that recovery of considerable quantities of ore from such development may be attended with lit tle tie difficulty all such development may not reasonably be expected to produce rich bodies of shipping grade but compared with many other districts and in zones of of this class promontory should give immense results where good judgment an and d a knowledge of the district has been the gu guide ide many new discoveries surface dincov eries are and will continue to be noteworthy incidents of more extensive prospecting probably not more than a third of the dis brict mineral areas |
