Show SAL T OF HARNEY PEAK MINES interesting history connected with south I 1 dakota tin property i 1 concerning the change in title to mining property having an almost international reputation the chronicle of custer south bakota says A deed dc of conveyance was filed for record with the register of deeds of ouster custer county last week whereby the tin mining alining milling manufacturing company and the jahasa mining alining company assignee convey to C H kamman of south dakota all their rights title and interest in all fi properties in which they are in possession both real and pero located in custer s and pennington counties the writer here of is not informed as to the consideration v involved but it is safe to say it runs into many thousands of dollars as the proper J ties involved consist of many valuable tin lode jode claims of considerable merit besides something like twenty placer mining claims which acreage runs up to several thousand acres and which are yielding considerable revenue each year the personal property consists of two two hundred and fifty ton concentrating mill and several hoist buildings ings and machinery beside they convey the townsite of hill city consisting of of four hundred and twenty town lots and many residences located thereon the principal property as described above lies around custer and below on french creek and west and south of custer and others described as lying around hill city and keystone south dakota passing of big corporation r by this deal passes into history one of the most gigantic mining corporations ever organized and operated in the black hills or perhaps any other mining camp in the world many of the chronicle readers will perhaps well remember that in the year 1885 and perhaps prior thereto the first property bought by this company included tho the famous etta mine near keystone upon which was erected a large tin concentrating plant and operated for some time we are told from a financial standpoint until the water vater supply failed them the success of f this undertaking served to stimulate to a greater and larger investment when in the fall of 1885 and spring of 1886 a gentleman arrived upon the scene from don england by the name of james wil n one of the greatest mining promoters that ever entered the black hills who became well known to many of the chronicle waders readers and the mining men of this vicinity and in and around hill city and keystone I 1 mr wilson aad associated with him e edward S baring gould and other capitalists and london england and many capitalists of new york city the com baily ny was organized with a capital of 10 0 they had a cash working capital of more than distributed in the banks of new york and a bank at rapid uty city then known as lake and halley afterwards the first national bank of rapid city shortly thereafter they started to erect the etta concentrating mill near key stone and located the main office and headquarters on pine creek between hill city and keystone where the old buildings are still lica located ted and from that time on purchased all properties perhaps indiscriminately that proved to have a tin prospect or prospect of other minerals started to develop a great many of the properties thus acquired in a short time they had employed something like three hundred men doing development and assessment work erected hoist buildings installed machinery and so forth and in a few years they had a total of fourteen such hoist buildings and machinery in operation in 1889 their main headquarters and offices were established at hill city south dakota where in 1892 they started to erect a second large concentrating cent rating mill at a cost of known today as the hill city tin mill connected the more meritorious mines and built railroads to the mills in 1894 a suit was begun to ret the company from making further investments and for the appointment of a receiver of all the assets business affairs books and papers of the said company dr albert R ledoux a well known mining man and metallurgist of new york city was appointed as such receiver and from that time to june 1909 the affairs of the company were handled by the receiver on that date a reorganization was perfected largely through the influence and good business tact of dr ledoux and his attorney mr perry and perhaps others connected with the new york office in august 1909 the harney peak company was succeeded by the present jahasa mining alining company as their assignees and successors ces sors and mr john A kerr of new york beca became me its president through whom the present transfer is being made all the deeds so far recorded are signed by john A kerr president and john al perry treasurer the jahasa mining alining company at execution sale had at custer on the day of june 1909 bought this property now owne owned d by the mr air kamman at a total expense of being principally interest and taxes accumulated during the period of receivership which lasted nearly twenty years and represented a total investment by the harney peak tin mining alining manufacturing company Compa of property should pay we are not advised as to whether mr kamman intends to resume operations in the spring or not we presume however that he will not let such good property as the cowboy tin mine lie idle as this property is well developed and shows c consider jable ore in sight which 1 ch we are reliably informed will yield a large profit from the ore already blocked out considering the present price of tin the ingersoll group of claims likewise is well developed and seems to be profitably operated under lease for rare minerals such as beryl and other minerals the european war however has somewhat interfered with the operation of this property as most of this mineral found a market in foreign countries more particularly in germany should the war end we presume this property will also be operated again by the lessee mr kamman is himself a practical metallurgist and has had large experience in these lines we therefore feel that succeeding to so large and valuable a property the country in and around custer hill city and keystone will be largely bene fitted by this transfer |
