Show new ma milling ng plant of the daly west mining co I 1 the big concentrating plant of the daly west mining company at park city utah was as destroyed by fire on the morning of december 28 1913 the structure with its contents intents on tents being a total loss I 1 i the company of which H G alc mcmillan millan lot f salt lake city is general manager notwithstanding the stringency in financial affairs irs existing at the time began ar ai once to ing the latter part of december 1914 almost a year to a day from the date of the destruction of the old plant and so far it is understood is fulfilling all predictions as to efficiency and economy of operation it is up to date in every respect and employs some new methods of ore reduction which will be watched with a great deal of interest by mine and mill operators aw A ja TI apt laj 7 4 7 ta J A AL of r I 1 gow V DalY hoist photo by W A adams park city utah West mill HP 2200 volt westinghouse motor geared to celiman seaver superintendent E L talbot who was in salt lake a few days ago and is easily supplying mill requirements quire ments as well as making shipments of crude ore to the valley smelters shelters sm elters in mine operation mr air talbot is giving employment to a force of about seventy men the daly west is one of the prominent mines of the west and is classed among the leaders of the great producers of park city to date the company has paid 6 in dividends and this total would have been added to during 1914 but for the fire that destroyed both hoisting works and mill on the companas comp anys property the mining alining review is indebted to mr air F p E steffy constructing engineer for the following description of equipment and flow sheet of the new mill this plant is made up of two departments the crushing and the concentrating which are located feet apart the ore at the former is delivered from the mine on a 31 33 1 0 foot robins conveyor emptying into two bins of tons each ca capacity acety it is drawn out of the botton bottom over to stephens adamson caterpillar feeders and there passes over two 2 inch grizzlies grizzlier grizz lies emptying into a colorado iron works pulley extracting all metallic substance in the way of iron steel and so forth this belt is eighteen inches wide traveling at a speed of feet per minute the product from here passes into a 48 inch simons fine disc crusher which makes a sizing of as inch the product fro from m this crusher while in transit on a twenty four inch conveyor belt passes over an automatic scale which weighs all ore going to the concentrator proper at this point it enters the concentrator proper where it discharges over an allis chalmers automatic sampler thence into a inch four mesh wire screen this makes a classification into two separate bins the undersize under size discharging into an atkin 54 inch classifier the oversize over size of the classifier passes into a franz fine jig of the hancock type the coarser product of this goes direct to a bin which feeds a coarse franz jig which makes three classes two of concentrate and one of middling while the tailings pass through and undershot under shot drag conveyor into a bin which in return feeds the sherman rolls which discharge into a steel bucket elevator style A belt 16 inches by 10 ply speed feet per minute this elevator runs to the roof some 59 feet high discharging into three impact screens size sieves 6 mesh no 14 wire the undersize under size of these screens discharges into three impact screens sieve 12 mesh no 18 wire while the oversize over size discharges into a inch while the un feeding ten wilfley tables while the overflow goes through a circular sherman tank this tank overflows into twenty one tanks six feet in diameter by six feet deep the overflow from these tanks is recovered and taken back to the system while the spigot discharge goes to a 16 compartment feeding to three compartment hartz jigs while the oversize over size goes back to a bin which feeds the heretofore mentioned sherman rolls the impact screens going back to the impact screens the second set in this battery makes an ail oversize which feeds another battery of hartz jigs known as the middling jigs and the last three sets of the impact screen feeds a battery of hartz hart z jigs known as the finishing jigs these jigs make a clean lead in the first hutch the second hutch makes a zinc the third hutch a middling all three of these battery go to three tables which makes a clean lead and zinc separation while the middling is returned to the crushing system thereby making it an impossibility for any included mineral to pass on to the tailrace tail race this being an enclosed circuit as it were this mill is equipped with three sherman slime tables where all undersize under size is i treated in case the flotat flotation iori machine for any reason should be down product of the wilfley taking up the product of the wilfley table on the upper table floor from two of these tables are passed to one table on the lower floor all tailings from this upper table floor pass direct to a sand jig on the lower floor of this mill consisting of two compartments here a separation of and tailings takes effect which if it has been possible for any mineral to escape any of the former processes 0 4 4 44 6 0 Daly West mill HP westinghouse motor this mill is one of the most up to date machines of its kind consisting of sixteen hutches the arst first two hutches being agitators only all of the balance are rotated by a mechanical device from one hutch to the other until the last hutch where there is a tailing discharge made this machine is operated by a 50 h p motor driven directly on to a countershaft counter shaft which in return propels sixteen vertical shafts which have four blade I 1 impel impellers lors causing a continual upward cur jent ent in one hutch while drawing from the bottom botto m of the preceding one thereby making a mechanical agitation this machine with the application of one pint of pine oil per ton makes the extraction of 98 per cent it has been found by experience of long duration that this machine does better wor work kat at a speed of revolutions per minute te frederick W sherman is superintendent ent or of this plant he is a man of a lifelong experience with concentration and is known in the west as the concentrating wizard izard he has had personal supervision f the construction of the mill while F E ieffa has been constructing engineer mr teffy also has had thirty years practical ermence in the building and operating of aern concentrating machines hoist and compressor room the equipment in the hoist and compressor room embody the very latest features differed by any manufacturer and was se cfred only after a very careful on c by the management the he question of simplicity durability and ef efficiency f chency were th the e essen essential t lal fea features ures furnished iby by the wellman Seaver Morgan company was designed for a rope pull of pounds and a rope speed of 1000 feet per minute it is of the double drum type and is driven by a horsepower 3 phase 60 cycle 2200 volt R P M 3 bearing type CI motor through single reduction herringbone herring bone gears the motor is the very latest design of steel frame construction and was manufactured by the westinghouse electric manufacturing company the liquid rheostat that controls the speed of the hoist motor has attracted con sid erable attention from the mining men in this section as it provides an infinite number of steps between the minimum and ana maximum limits permitting fine speed adjustments just ments and smooth acceleration the liquid rheostat was also manufactured by the westinghouse electric manufacturing company Compan yand and is the first one to be installed in the utah metal camps the compressor is of the two stage type manufactured by the laidlaw dunn gordon company and was designed to deliver 2750 cubic feet of air per minute and is direct connected to a horsepower 3 phase 60 cycle 2200 volt R P M self starting synchronous motor manufactured by the westinghouse electric company ail all of the electrical apparatus is controlled from the switchboard on which suitable instruments are placed to indicate the load at all times the substation is located feet from all other buildings the equipment consists of three K V A single phase oil insulated self cooled volt high tension to 2200 volt low tension transformers with the latest type of electrolytic lightning arresters all of the substation equipment was furnished by the westinghouse company |
