Show rochester a leading camp BY W W FISK rochester nevada feb 8 this is a aers camp perhaps not quite an ideal le ll 11 beca because use it requires one or two th thou ou ild dollars backing to make a good start 1 a lease but the leasers leaders lea sers have made buey ey here and it is the leasers leaders who have ade the e camp it is not a laborers camp wever ever there are very few men on any roll and there is no prospect of any oge for a year or two in III time the fining engineer Roo rochester liester mines will probably be operated cemp companies anies but for the present it is strictly a leasing camp any good miner who knows ore when he sees it who can find ore and follow it when found and who has a little money or can get one or two thousand dollars backing can come in here and make inake money leases can be had on good gi ground aund and on good terms with two years time to work during the first year 3 1913 the leasers leaders shipped over half a mil million lion dollars worth of ore this ore averaged about 25 per ton and yielded 40 per cent to the leasers leaders after paying shipping charges charge sampling smelter expenses and royalties during the past year there was not as much ore sent out but a large amount of work has been done and there is now a large number of tons of good milling ore blocked out waiting for the big mill that is almost ready to start in another month about tons of this ore will be going to this mill every day this ore runs from 10 to 25 per ton and there will be much more profit to the leasers leaders in having their ore treated in tile the mill here than there was when they shipped it to the smelter quite a number of the leasers leaders quit work after they had developed to a certain depth and the owners of the claims extended their time so that ehat they could take out all the ore then developed and send it to the local mill when completed the new rochester mill this thi s mill is a new style for nevada but there are several of them running successfully cess fully in colorado there were numerous tests made of the ore from this camp by this process before this mill was selected and the builders are under a guarantee as to the minimum of ore treated per day and percentage of extraction from same the mill is expected to treat tons per day and ana has been built with a view to enlarging the capacity as soon as the first unit has proven its claims the process of treatment is known as the dorr continuous countercurrent counter current decantation cyanide process there is a sampler between the rock breaker and the stamps and above the mill there are numerous ore bins for the accommodation of the different leas lea leaders leasers ers sers there is a large water tank on the side hill above the mill which will be supplied with water by a pipeline pipe line about six miles long the water running in by gravity from a small stream on the northwest slope of buffalo mountain the power will be supplied by an electric line put in by the nevada valleys power company with plant at lahontan near hazen this power line is about completed except for the transformers here at the mill the company intends to extend this power line all over the camp and furnish both power and lights to the towns and mines lincoln hill Two Stamp mill across the gulch from the big mill and a little lower down there is a joshua hendy two stamp amalgamation mill owned by the lincoln hill mining milling company whose mine is on tile the north slope of lincoln hill the ore is free gold in character as is the output of the other properties on lincoln hill and wilson hill this mill is now running on a lot of about ten tons of company ore that will average over per ton the mill recently finished d a lot of 0 ore re from a mine on wilson hill that ran 67 per ton and the owners have another lot of ore from a lease on lincoln hill to treat this mill is run by a casolene ga solene engine and obtains its water from a well in the bottom of the gulch the company expects soon to enlarge the mill and will probably add cyanide tanks so to treat other ores the ores thus far opened up on limerick ridge wilson hill and lincoln hill are mostly gold on independence ridge the values are about half and half gold and siver on nenzel hill the values near the surface were mostly silver but from feet down the gold values have been gradually increasing so far in id the packard section no great depth has been reached and the values are silver with some of the ore resembling the rich tonopah ore railroad facilities the camp is now connected by rail with the S P ry at nenzel formerly called oreana the nevada short line commonly called the codd road has been finished to the lower town and as soon as the frost is out of the ground will be carried on to the mines above the upper town so as to bring the ore from the big leases on nenzel hill to the mill this road has had all it could do to freight the lumber and machinery for the hig big mill now however as this thesis is about all on the ground the road will be able to handle the freight for the camp A casolene ga solene passenger car has been placed on the road and is now running and making two trips a day to connect with both trains of the espee this car was made in reno and is running very satisfactorily it makes the nine mile climb from nenzel to the lower town in about half an hour it can bring twelve passengers with baggage express and mail the first spur track has been run to the buck and charlie leasers leaders lea sers ore bin this lease has been shipping about two carloads a month but now with the direct shipping facilities they expect to increase their shipments to five cars a month this ore averages about 40 per ton although they have shipped some that run per ton higher and one car yielded the usual carload is fifty tons the buck arid and charlie vein runs a little west of south across the lower end of the independence ridge notes on promising properties on what is supposed to be the south extension of the buck and charlie vein just across octopus gulch the rochester lincoln consolidated mines company has two tunnels in the lower tunnel the company la api just getting into ore in two places from the other tunnel about feet above some ore has been shipped this company also has four claims on the south slope of lincoln hill on which it has found some very fine gold ore just to the east of the rochester lincoln ground in octopus gulch are the octopus claims on which a parallel vein to the buck and charlie has been opened near the head of limerick gulch there are several leasers leaders working on drift placer mines some of them are handling their gravel in dry washers and the others pack their gravel down to a spring and wash out the gold east of limerick canyon and on the other side of the range is american canyon in which placer mining has been carried on for many years but just at present there is little doing here although there is a dredger near the mouth of the canyon near the head of american and south american gulches and on the east cast slope of nenzel nenzel hill several leasers leaders have recently started work on some very promising showings the three big leasing companies on nenzel hill have nearly completed a common tunnel at the level of their lower workings from the mouth of this tunnel they are building g a surface gravity tramway to ore bins at the end of the railway survey it is expected that this work will be finished by the time the mill is ready to run and a contract has been let for h hauling abling the ore to the mill until the railroad is ready to handle the ore |
