Show metallurgical M cal progress in i n utah fc by L 0 HOWARD developments in metallurgical practice during the past year in utah have not been very extensive slight changes have been made in the various concentration plants at park city two of the mills the silver king coalition and the daly judge have made small installations looking to a better saving of slime values and the former now has a six deck table in operation with excellent results and a twelve deck machine is in course of construction similarly good results have been obtained with one of the six deck tables at the daly judge but the management is still committed I 1 understand to the use of straight Wilf leys in the silme department some experiments were conducted at the judge in saving slime values by settling on a long flat slowly movin moving endless belt but were abandoned before the construction of a large working model was complete all three plants in the camp have operated at reduced capacity during the year the daly west lost its plant by fire during the closing days of december this mill should have been written off some time ago and with in insurance money in the treasury the company seems to be in an ail excellent position to erect a new modern mill in a better location the year 1914 should see a new daly west mill and possibly small plants for the daly and american flag dry concentration has been abandoned for the time being for the treatment of zinc lead the rather complicated modification ol 01 old processes used for the on ontario tario low grade grada ores has been meeting th the usual difficulties of new plants of this kind and no information is available as to the successful outcome of the years operations copper concentration at garfield the mills of the utah copper company have been tr treating elating well over tons daily with a slightly better extraction the ohio copper mill at lark has shown some improvement in recovery under the new management but much yet remains to be done to bring the process up to its full efficiency I 1 understand that all the porphyry companies have been conducting experiments with the minerals separation process of oil flotation and it is probable that 1914 will see some great developments in concentration cent ration of porphyry ores the process has just begun to get a foothold in this country and it would not be at all surprising to have it become the mainstay of the porphyry coppers as it has of zinc concentration cent ration in montana where it is in most successful operation by the same interests which have the largest property yat at bingham some leaching experiments have also been conducted on the porphyry ores an enlarged ton plant is in contemplation temp lation by the utah apex at bingham and this plant may be in operation by the end of 1914 treatment of precious metals in the mercur district the con mercur ceased operations early in the year and dismantled its plant the franklin mill was run for a time on ores from the old geyser marion with indifferent success and is now idle on the west dip the norma mill ran n several months at a profit with a capacity capaci of about forty five tons but severe weather in december caused it to close and it wil w il probably not resume until the filter plant pla capacity has been doubled the camp of INTer mercur cur proper is about deserted nothing but the grade of the salt lake and mercur bierc railroad remaining and most of the houses hous having been moved in the stockton section the honerine mill was run on stockton ores and the tl ophir hill finished remodeling and treated about tons of ore during the year Cy cyaniding Cyan iding plants have operated during part of the year at bingham and on old 0 tailings at tintic gintic but the latter is no closed for the winter in beaver county the sheep rock mill m added a cyanide annex to recover the 3 t 5 left in the tailings from the stamp mill mi and should be in full operation this year yea at the mouth of the cottonwoods Cotton woods nei nea salt lake the wasatch utah failed of satis sati factory recovery by amalgamation alon but it is too early yet to say what su cess the recently erected cyanide ann will have grinding is done in a achilea mill followed by amalgamation and chani ing on an ore estimated to contain 2 i 1 gold i new mill at tintic gintic toward the end of the year the knicl chlorination mill in the tintic gintic district star sta k ed its first ton unit presumably usi the process patented late in the year 1 N 0 christensen jr the patent stati static that the first ton unit of a large PI L is s now in course of erection at silver city 1 utah for the treatment of ores of that district brict by this method the process consists of mixing the ore I 1 with sodium chloride and pyrite grinding moistening with mill solution containing an f approximately abely saturated solution of the chlorides of sodium magnesium and calcium R and some hydrochloric acid using about 6 I 1 to 15 per cent of solution spreading the mixture three to eighteen inches thick on the revolving hearth of a roaster roasting cooling discharging and leaching r the furnace has a perforated hearth and hot air is blown biown through after ing the ore is agitated with mill solution and bleaching powder is added to dissolve the gold silver ch chloride chlorede lorde is dissolved by 1 the other chlorides copper by the hydro acid and lead by the acid salt tion the solution is clarified and the residue washed precipitation is by successive steps gold and silver on copper and copper and lead on iron the fumes from the roasting operation are washed by precipitated mill solution in a tower and volatilized metals thus recovered the success of this process will mean much to the district but metallurgists are wondering what provision has been made to take care of the refractory zinc in the ores no data on results are available and no official statement has been made as to the success of the process the smelting smelling Sm elting plants among the smelters shelters sm elters there has been con sid de erable rable reconstruction during the year at garfield a new stack is in process of erection together with dust chamber and flue system the ies les were modified to use oil for firing and exhaustive tests have been conducted on the cottrell process of fume precipitation by electricity and results are said to have been very satisfactory is and an installation on a large scale may be forthcoming motors have been installed on the industrial system for handling mater materials fals and products at the international three thre more emore lead stacks distinguished by double rows of jackets were installed during the year and large additions made to the stockpile the company now has five stacks in operation the dwight lloyd sintering wintering sint ering plant was brought up to capacity with ten machines in operation and the copper plant resumed operations early in the year much iou ore has been smelted smelter in the converters during the year and little trouble has been experienced in treating the leady matte from the lead plant along with the copper matte from the at murray the roasting equipment nas been augmented by the addition of three mcdougall furnaces and two more will probably be added this spring four dwight lloyd sintering wintering sint ering machines were put in and an enlargement of this plant is said to be pending it is also rumored that a bedding system will be installed soon many improvements have been made at murray looking to the more expeditious handling of materials to the furnaces at midvale the dwight lloyd capacity has been increased and some improvements in handling material by belt conveyors have been made perhaps the greatest development in smelting smelling sm elting operations is the improvement in handling lead ores with less labor and greater economy and the increase in the sintering wintering sint ering capacity of the lead plants both marking a tendency toward better methods in the metallurgy of lead during the year the bingham mines plant at midvale and the yampa at bingham were sold and dismantled and no trace of of the highland boy plant is left at bingham the majestic at milford the independent at ogden the knight at silver city and the utah and eastern at shem were idle as usual during the year commercially utah still maintains its position as the greatest smelting smelling sm elting center of the west |
