Show the deep creek country utah by DUNCAN MACVICHIE the term deep creek applies to a large area in the middle western portion of the state ot of utah and the eastern portion of the state of nevada the district is easily reached by the western pacific leaving the railroad at wendover a station miles west of salt lake city thence by stage or auto south a distance of approximately forty six miles the important mineral sections lying within the state of utah the dutch mountain on the western side of the great salt desert approximately forty miles south of wendover the deep creek mountains extending southerly from dutch mountain a distance of about fifty miles fish springs granite mountains and dugway mountains these three latter districts being about the same distance south of wendover as the deep creek range but thirty miles to the east the mineral sections in the state of nevada and within the so called deep creek district are ferber situated about thirty miles south of wendover muncey creek trout creek snake creek and tippetts all being within from seventy to miles of wendover the principal minerals found in these districts are gold silver lead and copper gold silver tungsten has also been discovered in the deep creek mountains but there has not been sufficient development work done to establish tungsten in commercial quantities on the north end of the deep creek range the gold hill mine cane springs and alvarado properties were worked quite extensively ten some twenty five or thirty five years ago for gold and silver by the late colonel woodman geology the formation of the different districts consists largely of limestone and grano dio rite with large intrusive igneous dikes the ore occurs as a replacement in the limestone along the lines of fissures and fractured zones and also in true fissures found in the grano diorite the development of the different properties has not been extensive due largely to two reasons first that the ore is of low grade and will not stand the long expensive wagon haul and second that development work is expensive due to the fact that supplies and fuel for power have to be hauled from forty to eighty miles by wagon I 1 do not look for any great development of the districts until a railroad is built at least well into the north end of the deep greek creek range mining engineer salt lalie lake city the clifton district taking up the districts a little li atle in detail with a brief account of what has been done the clifton district includes the Clifio i mountains and dutch mountain and the east flank of the deep creek range with a mm erali zed area of thirteen by five miles the th district has been more or less active sinei silica the early sixties and had a lead in 1872 amalgamation and cyanide plants have also striven to relieve the tion problems the western utah copper company has hari four groups of claims the gold ifill hill tuolumne calaveras talaveras Cala veras and yellow hammer recent developments on the gold hill havo havi opened copper and lead ores this mine is opened by levels at 80 and feet the largest ore shoot extending to a depth of feet and being about eighty feet wide and feet long there is another shoot to feet long and sixty feet wide the property is calculated to have a developed tonnage of tons of ounce gold 1 36 6 ounces silver and 51 per cent copper A few hundred tons toils of lead ore developed give promise of a larger ore body assays essays show forty cents in gold ounces silver 1513 per cent lead and 25 per cent iron the cane springs gold mining milling company owns the alvarado and cane springs group and the franklin claim on the alvarado ore has been scoped for feet along the fissures from the to the surface and a good showing of the sul aphides on the indicates other shoots no commercial ore is in sight on the adjoining cane springs although some tons toils was produced from a four foot vein there are however some small showings of copper the wilson property east of the franklin comprises twelve claims with good droppings crop pings the black bird success copper queen monicca Mo silver king senator red jacket watson tungsten robinson midas erickson gardiner evans brewer spotted faun and darnell are others of which the gardiner and evans have chave done the most development the ferber district the ferber district some twelve miles due west of the north end of dutch moun tain comprises the regent group chance copper sheridan pete reed bradley copper martha washington saide D big chief stone cabin great western and salt lake group most of which have been de to shallow depths with some good copper showings the dugway district the duew dugway y district is located in the dugway mountains thirty miles from gold hill with a developed area of two by three miles reached by a sixty mile drive from st johns on oil the salt lake route the district was worked in the seventies but transportation por tation difficulties have limited the output some shipments have been made from the black maria buckhorn four metals utahna mineral hill and belcher from shallow developments the st george copper company has some shipping tonnage of iron and copper sulphides sulp hides available and has shafts feet and feet deep from the latter of which there are feet of drifts the ocean group with a foot shaft has good copper and iron showings the black dragon and dugway copper likewise show considerable copper at less than feet some development mostly by foot shafts and some drifting has been done on oil the golconda bertha yellow jacket and big four all with good lead showings the snow bird has a good iron outcrop and the alice has a number of openings showing considerable shipping ore the fish springs district this district is twenty five miles southeast of gold hill has produced for about two decades and one mine the utah has paid about a quarter of a million in dividends it is opened to the and in the fissures following the porphyry lime contact are chimneys of high grade lead silver ore ore is hauled eighty miles to deseret and about tons has been produced for a valuation of nearly a million dollars adjoining is the galena with similar showings and a recorded production of about cons tons the spring creek district is located about forty miles south of ferber the veins in ill limestone carry lead antimony silver and gold in strong surface but there are no deep workings the queen of sheba is located on a great quartz vein carrying considerable gold it is my opinion that the mineral and agricultural possibilities of this section warrant the construction of a railroad from wendover south into the deep creek mountains |
