Show THE COTTRELL FUME PROCESS experimental pant of the balaklava Balak lala consolidated soli soi dated copper company des described abed A new process for the elimination of fumes and gases from smelter smoke is now being tried out at ai the works of the balaklava Balak lala consolidated copper company at coram california under the direction of manager R T white under whose able supervision during the past four years the balaklava Balak lala has made such an en enviable vable reputation and record the method emp employed foyed at the balaklava Balak lala is designated as the cottrell fume process and the experimental plant is a small one but it is understood that this is to be enlarged to a size which will handle the entire smoke outa output ut of the companas comp anys big smelter the courier free press of redding cal CaF fornia in describing the operation of the cottrell process with the experimental plant says what is known know n as the experimental plant has a cross section of electrodes nine square feet with a capacity of cubic feet a minute the big plant will have an area of square feet of electrodes with a capacity of cubic feet a minute and the experimental plant is no toy it cost to set up 2600 and has cost in the neighborhood of to make it as practical as it is today when mr white was ready to divert the fumes through the new plant and he ordered the electricity load to be turned in of volts the palpable smell of ozone was almost suffocating then the electrodes were closed in wah an iron covering and the writer observed the action of the on the smoke where one instant a ca loud cloud of thick sulphurous vapor was pouring Z out in another nothing but the least trace of smoke could be seen conclusively clu showing that the electrodes were 11 getting away with the solids surprising to one who has eaten sulphur smelter smoke more or less for the past twelve years As mr white says we have surely got the appl ance which will do the business there are electrodes in the precipitating box through which the smoke is blown then into the stack and out into the air what is left of it the electrodes are in units and consist of baw teeth strips of iron three quarters of an inch wide and four feet long between these there are flat piece electrodes in plates about six inches wide upon which the dust freely precipitates and after so much has accumulated it is shaken off ninety per cent of the dust accumulates on the flat plates the products byproducts by of the process are not valuable and the entire smoke consuming inseal installation lation will be run at a heavy expense without any compensating addan advantage tage to the smelter except that which mig might accrue from lack of annoyance to neighboring co country antry Exper experimental mental bag house so that every opportunity should be given to thoroughly test out the cottrell process and the other admittedly successful process of smoke inseal aaion the balak lala management had a min bag house of four bag Z capacity erected within a few feet of the cottrell process one very important result was obtained from the use ot of this the smoke having been forced into previously loose woolen bags and continuous treatments experimented with it was apparent that there was no free sulphuric acid in the smoke beng being emitted from the big stack over one hundred analyses of the smoke have proved that there is no free sulphuric acid in california ores there being enough zinc in the ores to offset the institution of neutralizing agencies the big instas bation manager white hopes to get the new plant installed and running by july ls ast 1st t and is rushing material to that end As the outlay will approach the mark some idea may be taken of its magnitude nine permanent units are to be put in and seven of these will be in constant use with two for reserve two of the largest fans ever erected in america if not in the world and again california is a land of big things are under construction they will be inches in diameter with a capacity of cubic feet of gaj a minute the wheels will be ninety inches wide the he duty of these immense fans will be to draw the gases out of tha flue through the precipitating units and them up the stack the flue will be eighteen feet wide and twenty feet high and the most pretentious building in connection wah w th the process will be one forty by sixty feet of galvanized iron and steel to house the rectifier and transformers it will take probably two hundred horsepower additional to run the new plant the present load is about six hundred horsepower from the northern ca i fornia power company and this will be increased as suggested th s is not all the power utilized by the smelter at this time there is a large voltage generated from steam the water for which is heated by waste heat from the furnaces |
