| Show CHEERFUL VIEW col D C jackling general manager of the utah copper company the ray consolidated the chino and gila copper who has returned to salt lake from an extended visit east is not all alarmed over the present condition of coppers and is thoroughly satis satisfied fled that the feeling of pessimism now prevailing will soon be nothing more than a memory in an interview with a representative of the mining review mr jackling took a most cheerful view of the situation and in commenting upon the outlook referred to interviews in the salt lake daily papers in which he said while the coper situation at the present moment cannot be said to be encouraging there is no reason to be apprehensive of the future much has been said lately about the flood of copper which the porphyry producers are to turn loose upon the country the fears thus aroused being generally based upon the assumption that there is virtual lyly no limit to the possibilities of such production in that connection it shou should shoud d be remembered that not a new porphyry has been discovered within the last generation and with the exception of inspiration development of no new one has been begun within the last three years the disseminated copper deposits of bingham of ely of globe of ray and of chino have been known for many years to exist solving the problem of successfully treating them is of course relatively new and since it has been demonstrated that they can be commercial iced this and other countries have been searched for similar deposits without success the accumulation of copper stocks at this time is by no means overwhelming it is not nearly so large as it has been at other periods in the history of the industry where prices were not seriously affected the accumulation now is due to the cessation of consumption the year following the 1907 depression consumption the last year has kept pace with production and it is a fact that taking no account of possible reduction of output by old mines assuming that they will continue to produce copper at the rate they have produced it the last few years the addition to the stocks which will be made during the next ten years by the porphyry mines will not more than meet the normal increase of consumption it is thus that we have no apprehension of the future of the copper industry the march of progress neither of this country nor of the world at large is to stop there may be occasional halts but for the period of ten years at least normal progress will be maintained the new copper to be made by the porphyries ries will be noticed not to exceed two or three years it will have no more lasting effect on the industry at large than would two or three excessive grain crops have upon the farming industry the feeling in the east upon the general situation is one of uncertainty rather than one of alarm no one apprehends a critical sit aution and many believe that the bottom of the momentary depression has been reached the feeling of unrest in regard to political matters is a factor as is the diversion of large sums of money to the exploiting of new industries notably irrigation and oil but so long as capital is reasonably busy there is no cause for alarm industrial conditions are good generally railroad traffic is at least normal with crops of average size there should be quick recoveries co veries in all lines |
